Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • First Post. Need help with purchase of first VW MK4 GTI - 1st Gear Synchro

    G'day guys,

Looking at purchasing my first ever VW. It is a 1999 MK4 GTI. 139,000 kms.

Had a look at it today. Identified the following problems...

Synchro for first gear is a bit ****y...sometimes have to go into 2nd before you can get 1st.

I heard a very slight knock over bumps which I suspect was a suspension issue. Like a worn bush or something.

Central locking had some issues with unlocking all the doors. I could not get rear right door open at all.

Rear right power widow would also not work and rear left window was hesitant at times to go up and required repetitive pushes over the control.

Could not get elec mirrors to work at all.

Few scratches here and there on the bumpers but only typical stuff (not overly concerned coz id probably change to R32).

Back seat had a ciggy burn. Interior was pretty good otherwise. (recaro seats are awesome)

Rest of body was really good. Drove really well...felt really nice. Can majorly tell the difference between jap and euro. Engine was smooth...steering and brakes good. Engine was clean could not see any evidence of leaks. Everything else worked fine.

Trying to work out if it is worth the money. My biggest concern is obviously the gearbox? Will I need a replacement box or can this be fixed? What kind of money would I be looking at to get it fixed?

    Your help is much appreciated.

    Cheers, Joe

Im not to good for help with the engine stuff because i have a 2.0 Bora but the window issue may just be a regulator which are only a couple of hundred dollars if i can remember correctly (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) but i can't really help on the other stuff very much.

it all depends on how much the car costs in the end, if its much cheaper than others id say go for it because apart from the gearbox there really doesn't seem to be too many important things wrong with it to me that can't be fixed with a little bit of time and money.
