  • SA Hello from SA!

Hi VWWatercooled, I joined up to search for some info for my potential new MK5 GTI. Currently driving a 97 Honda Prelude.

    Q. I have read about the DSG mechatronic units commonly failing. Should I be concerned enough to buy a used MK5 with full VW history and no ECU upgrade?

    Q. Should I look into buying VW warranty for used vehicles?

    Q. Is there anything else I should be aware of in relation to common issues that may cost me a fortune when I do own a Golf?

    Cheers!

Welcome. Good to have another SA member.

Do some searching using the google search bar and you'll find heaps on DSG and mechatronic units. Just remember that, for all the negative info you hear on the forum about failures, there are thousands of DSGs out there running fine.

Also, if you have any concerns about buying a second hand vehicle get a pre-purchase inspection - I know both German Auto (Melrose Park) and Auto Studio (bottom of Unley Rd) who are VW specialists do pre-purchase inspections. Good piece of mind if you're concerned.

      Thanks for that!

I have been lurking on here for the last week just digging up some solid info through some older threads and some of the members having issues.

I have a few Golfs from interstate that seem to fancy my liking
