Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Newb alert... getting my Blue Golf R next Tuesday!

Well, I love my WRX (MY01, 3inch exhaust etc), and will shed a tear when (if!) I sell it, but I am getting a manual Golf R, pickup Tuesday! I had to compromise one option in order to get it without the waiting list, and that is the ACC/DCC But it has sunroof and satnav and manual, all the other things I wanted (took a DSG one for a drive, and while traffic light drags are great with the DSG, you still don't get the fully connected feel, when say, blatting it through the windy twisty roads of Akuna bay where I took the demo one for a spin, there seems to be the typical auto lag when you get on the pedal of waiting for it to decide which gear it wants you to be in, not good when you are trying to use throttle control to keep tight in the corner...).

I thought long and hard about keeping my WRX till it runs into the ground (120K on the clock is pretty light though), getting a new WRX (or preferably STI), or getting something less plasticy and I loved the R32 when it came out... and since learned it had to move way for the lesser sounding, but better performing R... so wondered if the R was for me.
Come the Volkswagen sale 2 weeks ago, and some kind of insanity, I rocked up to the dealer and asked to buy one (kind of sort of) .

You can't argue with the price (compared to the STI certainly)... and the interior is sooo much nicer (not to mention I am not getting any younger, and, while I have managed to avoid the wrath of the law with my hooning in the WRX, something a bit more sleeper looking might be better).

So all those comparo's saying "they are in completely different markets, why compare them"... well, in my mind, I have been trying to compare them for ages, so many pros and cons of each....

I did sell her (MY01 WRX) a few weeks ago.... will miss your rapid acceleration and rawness!
Still miss the boxer engine rumble, I haven't heard one Golf 2L turbo youtube vid exhaust note sound that compares or that I even enjoy that much. Although I do love the R "burble" as you subtly modulate the accelerator pedal (is it the flapper opening and closing possibly?), would like to hear the BOV a bit more (not an air venting ricer one) (I de-snorkalated the WRX intake to improve that, amazing what removing a plastic resonator with a funny kink in it can do!, thinking of an intake for the Golf but don't want to radically alter the engine bay or engine cover). Would like to hear the wastegate "whistle" a bit *less*. It seems to really get a big whistle under heavy boost/acceleration! I can only assume it is the wastegate opening up to release some of the pressure build up (it gets plenty of that, the stock WRX was only 14psi, I believe the Golf R is significantly higher boost).

The Golf R though has some low down balls and solid torque increase over RPM though! It is not a rapid hit like the WRX had, but, it is amazing pulling up steep hills in 5th or 6th at less than 3000rpm! I don't really like the electronic nannies though, it seems the car is really held back by the ESC etc, today I booted it out of a side street to cut into a stream of moving traffic, the rear brake decided to apply as it was on the verge of breaking out into a tiny bit of wheel spin, I thought something had run into me! I wish it wasn't so aggressive at holding the power back, it should allow a bit of spin, and clearly the car wasn't going sideways to require "protecting me" with ESC... I don't like the idea of disabling the TC & ESC every time I get in, it would be nice if they were a bit more "moderate" rather than the seemingly aggressive nature they hold back that I have experienced in the 1400km of driving so far...

Can't complain about the economy though, although for my daily small drives to work, it is 13.5L/100km, probably 1.5L/100km worse than the WRX (WRX had an SAFC to lean out the fuel a bit, which helped both its economy and power, will be interesting to see how much fuel is saved with the Bluefin on the Golf), but on a 400km drive around the Southern Highlands on Easter Monday, I had the best economy I have had in years and years, 8.5L/100km (and this certainly wasn't driving like a granny, it seems it is most economical driving approx 100-110, with a few "I have to overtake safely by flooring it till I get past, officer" type moves).

I still wonder if the STI was the better option for me, but those things are so pricey and seeing some of the same switch etc gear that my 12year old car had, in the current model, made me realise that Euro was probably the best upgrade, despite all the electronics and jazz limiting my fun
(I do love most of the electronics, HIDs turning as you hammer around bends at night, simply brilliant, I drove tonight on the old Pacific Highway from Mooney Mooney back to Hornsby-ish, sooo nice to have great lighting! It almost can "sense"when the corner is coming, that is how it felt to me anyway).

One day when I am starting to get a big 90deg "whoops" in the wet on a bit of spilled diesel or something, I will probably praise the ESC in saving me (I had a few "OMG" moments in the WRX hitting slippery bits and the back, in combo with my right foot, trying to swap with the front... sometimes it was self inflicted to have a bit of fun before I realised it was starting to slide a tad too much...)

All in all, I am happy with the purchase, the car is so much more refined, probably at the expense of a bit of fun, but, hey, fun can still be had (but at illegal speeds ;p). Now here is hoping that the MK7 doesn't come out too soon and tempt me or make me envious (I never felt that way with the WRX, I liked my bug-eyes, only when they started doing the widebody version this year I felt it was time to finally upgrade).

    Rambling over...

I'd suggest that the R is more of a "grown-up" than an STi, but either would be great to own, and the R is so much more classy on the inside, where you spend all of the time.

How did you find the insurance companies compare purchase price-relative premiums for the R vs STi?

Didn't compare, but my WRX was about $1500 annual (varied lots, started at $1900 new, went down each year then suddenly up and finally down again last year... This is AAMI with no accident/infringement history and full ncb), Golf R thru AAMI was quoted at about the same (so $58K new car vs $15K agreed value 12 year old car).

Despite my history, age etc, it seems turbo cars in Sydney in most regions get hit with big premiums.
I can't imagine where I live (near Epping) would be considered any kind of risk area (apart from a certain race or two of dodgy drivers with dubiously obtained licences more prone to silly fender benders... not happened to me so far touch wood)... I guess just the nature of insurance in the big smoke Sydney.
