  • VIC Hi from a new Polo GTI owner

    Hi I'm just introducing myself as a proud owner of a brand new white two door Polo GTI picked up just over two weeks ago.

    I was lucky enough to make a phone call to the dealer two weeks prior and he must have had one which someone else had cancelled the order on.

    It has no special options, I'm rapt with it, I've always wanted a hot hatch ever since about five years old (I'm now 40).

    Very happy with it, although I haven't opened up the throttle at all I can tell it's got some go (still babying haven't done 500 km's yet).

    Congrats!

    Whatever you do, don't baby the car at run in period. Find some hilly roads and give it some load going uphill. Not saying trash the car.

    Cars that are babies at run in more likely to consume oil down the road.

      So many theories on run-in, I've run it up to about 4,500 rpm at medium throttle on flat roads so I suppose I've opened it up a bit (couldn't help it really ).

      Thanks for the run-in tips, I was thinking of taking it up to the hills today, lucky I didn't though as we had some cars trashed today in Melbourne with the hail-storm.

      Any other tips on run-in?

      What about changing oil after 1,000 km's?

            Guessed it according to your location. Nearest dealer to southbank is south yarra. That's where I got mine too!

              Congrats on the new car, I say run it in should be trashing it. Drive it like you stole it! It will ensure the rings bed in properly. I trashed mine from the get go and have no oil consumption issues.

                Took markwid's advice headed to the hill's this morning, man can this little thing tear up tight bends, seems to want to go way past my comfort zone!! Only saw traction control light come on once accelerating hard out of a hairpin bend wet road.

                What surprised me was that the DSG really held the gears out to 4,000+ rpm up (and down) even moderately protracted steep climbs (and descents).
                Which is very different to the way it behaves on flat roads, probably changing up a bit early for my liking (in 'D').
                And then in 'S' mode on flat runs it holds gears out too long, would like somewhere in between as not entirely comfortable with the paddle shift as yet.

                So the engine has now been given a good run, and love that oil temperature gauge, tells me when the engine is properly warmed instead of guesswork + lets me know when it's pushing hard (climbs above 100C). I leave oil temp on all the time, really useful (as opposed to water temp just sits on 90C after 1st couple minutes & never deviates).
