sudden oil leak/but engine runninng fime

I have a 2000 passat, my STOP engine light came on, car was running fine, put oil in, get to gas station and oil started running out from under engine, dead center, and oil had sprayed over front of engine, until this had no problems, any ideas I heard no loud sounds, no stalling. robin

Cracked sump, oil filter not tight? When was it last serviced. If there's oil dripping it should be easy to find where from.
