Hello, firstly I have owned many Vws, a lot of vans, and still have 4, a 63 15 window deluxe bus, an 85 camper a 2000 caravelle, and an 07 Multivan.
They are all great to drive, but I have to report some disappointment with the later ones. They have both been troublesome, and the 2000 model very costly to maintain.
In both cases the Auto Transmission has been the scary part. I was warned early in the ownership of the caravelle the trannys fail at 100k, and sure enough mine did, at around 95k, well outside warranty. $6.5k later it was back on the road.
When it was being fixed the repair guy, who was r´commended by VW said the later one was worse ( would fail earlier ) and would cost much more to fix. A thing called a valve body seems to be the main culprit, and costs something like 3k from VW. Try to find a second hand one, or indeed tranny. Hens teeth !
I have also had a side door fall off its hinges on the 07 and failure of the sat nav, amongst many annoying problems.
I have found it hard to find a genuine VW service centre that I feel I cam really trust to service the vehicles.
Often arguing, one of the latest about sealed for life Auto transmissions. The word is that not replacing transmission fluid is also contributing to early failure of transmissions.
I love the drive but not the drama, to the extent I have ordered a new Toyota van, and selling the others.
Just wondering if anyone else has been unlucky with what should be a great drive ( and is when all is going well )
David.
