  • G'day

    G'day,

Old work buddy told me about the site so here I am

I'm an ex-Adelaide former-noder now living in the UK (NI).

Previous cars in Oz were a bit pov - Camira, Commodore, Verada, Magna Sport - no taste at all

Left the country for long service leave in '07 and paid €200 for a second hand VW Jetta in Germany - loved it to death, quite literally - she lasted a good 18 months and survived a pan-european trip from Southern Germany all the way to Belfast before she was put to rest at the steel recyclers...

Next was a 2.0L '99 Megane Coupe - a step up at £1275 - she also lasted 18 months before being sold on to some guy who wanted a wee shopping car for his mum... >.<

Finally got into something a bit sporty after hitting fourty - a 2006 Subaru STi Spec D. A year later I was in physio for chronic back pain (sciatic) - so the local dealership got a bargain!

I've just picked up a black 3dr '02 Golf GT TDI and what can I say - she's wubbly!

Sadly I wasted a fair bit of £ on the Spec D, so budget is tight for improvements at this stage. The first thing she'll get is a good detailing (if the sun stays around) and a few layers of Naviwax.

Engine bay is tidy enough and the original rims were refurbed by the dealer - but the centre caps are a bit rough, so I'll have to hunt around for a half reasonable replacement set - there seems to be plenty on eBay, but I'm not sure which ones are genuine/good quality/knock-offs yet

The Spec D was quite a discrete STi, so I'm tempted by the idea of de-badging, but I'm not sure it will be as good an effect on the Mk4 - it would look a bit naked without them I feel... opinions welcome!

Suspension won't be high on the list as the main reason I changed cars was to get a softer, more comfortable ride - which the Mk4 does in spades, compared to the Spec D. So no real desire to muck around with that (don't want to make the back any worse)...

A map is definitely something on the medium term list - probably early next year - will have to read up on what my options are in terms of stages and how far I can go on a reasonable budget (without overcapitalising).

Anyway, enough rambling - just glad to have a car I can drive again!

    Cheers

I still miss my Spec D. It was fun while it lasted! But I do like my Mk4 TDI

Welcome to the forums Leigh! Hopefully pics of the new 'un will be forthcoming!

Check out the Mk4 and Tuning and Performance sections for info on your ecu map options. I know Oettinger have a good name for diesel tunes and do the mk4... As you're in the EU you should have a ton of good options.

    Enjoy the comfy ride!

Cheers Adam! Loving the ride so far - and the economy is insanely good 40mpg driving home from the local pub tonight (30mph zone)... unreal compared to the scoob

She's fogging up inside quite badly though, so I think there's a filter that needs cleaning - I remember seeing something on a forum somewhere about that... will have to search for it again.

      Cheers
