Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Drove a new Corolla, and a new Golf 118TSI.

The Corolla was OK but felt a bit sluggish. It was no nonsense, but uninspired. Hated the centre console thing they have going on with the gear shift. All the models going up from the base line are essentially identical apart from bolt ons for bling, but nothing for added driving experience (handling/motor options/etc). Driving the base model is essentially the same as driving the Levin ZR. I won't say it's bad, but mostly it's boring. I see Toyota are also adding the cost of an extended warranty onto their quotes, even if you didn't ask for one.

On the other hand, the Golf was an entirely different kettle of fish. The cabin layout is sensible (although the MDI taking up all the centre console space is a shame). The ride was very quiet, even during a spirited press of the accelerator or two. My wife commented on some of the little things like how the placement of the door closing hand grips made it more comfortable to use the door arm rests than the Corolla. And also things like the helpful gear selection suggestions in the MFD, and the fact we could easily pair her phone via Bluetooth without needing to look in the manual for instructions. For a mere 18kw of extra power, the Golf was far more responsive to accelerator input across a range of gears, and the handling made it feel effortless. The hill start assist was also nice (we live in a hilly suburb). I could go on. My wife summed up the Golf as "a car for grown ups". I couldn't agree more. The bug has bitten. We'll be placing our order for a TSI118 w/- Sports Pack next week. I think I now appreciate how VW have come to have such a large following of enthusiasts. I've just become one.

Also, a quick thanks to all the forum members who have posted so much useful information here. It's been invaluable over the last few weeks that I've been lurking as I researched the Golf.

What car is the Golf replacing ???

The Golf is much nicer than the Corolla,no doubt, but for build quality and reliability, you just CANNOT beat a Corolla.

    I have owned 4 VWs and 3 Corillas,as well as a Ford,Holden,and Honda now.

A 2003 Toyota Echo sedan we bought new. It'll stay in the family, but will be used by our nearly 17yr old daughter.

Certainly, our Toyotas have been reliable. Even though there's plenty of hatches to choose from at the moment, for us the decision was always going to come down to the Corolla or the Golf. It's probable that our tastes have changed over the years, but the Corolla just seemed to lack any excitement. Even our 8 year old Echo seemed to feel zippier. And really, we just couldn't live with that console. The storage area under the gear shift is inaccessible as soon as you pull the seat forward a little, and the gear shift position is uncomfortable (in our opinions). Visually, I'm not fond of a piece of silver plastic merging from the hand brake into the dash board. I understand there's talk of a new model coming, but unfortunately it won't be in our time frame this time around. We really wanted to like the Corolla, but for us right now, the Golf was superior in almost every aspect. This will be our first VW, although I drive a Caddy at work that was the catalyst for us investigating the Golf. Admittedly, if it wasn't for the current VW Drive Away sale, the price might have been beyond what we would have been prepared to spend on a midsize family hatch.
