Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC dual cab fan with dying gearbox

Hi, my name is Roger, I live in Bairnsdale and I am the happy (or mostly happy) owner of a 1995 T4 dual cab chassis. This has been the best work vehicle I have ever owned (I'm a professional handyman). But ALAS! My gearbox is dying and I need a replacement at a reasonable price (have been quoted $2750 for a recon or $1600 for second hand). Either recon or secondhand still gets a bit expensive once labour is added. Does anyone have a good secondhand box at a more reasonable price?

Also, just lately the engine has developed a strange and annoying ssymptom. After running for a few minutes or more and then switching off, when you restart it seems to have a vapourlock for about 30 seconds ie it starts okay, but if you try to drive off straight away it backfires and nearly stalls. The only way to avoid this is to sit and run the engine until it runs smoothly (about 30 secs). Does anyone know what is causing this? Grateful for any advice. Roger

    Hi Roger,

Welcome to the forum. Good to see some more Bairnsdale people on here!! (by the way I think you live up the road from me...)
I'm guessing you got that quote from Dejongs?

Can't help you with a gear box but I'm sure someone on here can.
    Good luck
