Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • WA New to VW

Hi all; new to the VW scene.

Getting a Tiguan TDI as soon as it arrives at the dealer (hopefully before the official release date later this month!). I'm as green as they get, this is my first car and I intend to have it last into the next decade.

Still looking at options over the next couple of weeks and trying to see if getting things like RNS510 is really worth the extra cash before I pick up the car.

I'll be sure to explore the forum as part of a little further research. Happy for any input from others.

    cheers!

    Aurange.

    welcome abaord Aurange.

Hopefully you will get it before the wash/cruise/meal and you can bring it along and meet some of the locals. If it doesnt arrive in time, you are still welcome to come along

      Welcome mate.
Is this the new shape (Gen 2) tiguan?

The RNS is nice but not worth the facotry price, just pic one up off ebay (uk/lithuania).

      What colour are you getting?

Yes, it's the new 2012. Going from some reviews, not everyone likes the slightly modified grill, but it's fine by me. Going for white with black leather.

As far as the navigation goes, I haven't been able to figure out what it is about the RNS that makes it worth even the $1K-odd (eBay), considering that a top range Nuvi or similar can do bluetooth handsfree and has an advanced level of navigation features at about a third of the reduced price. The only plus of the RNS is that the screen is larger (although mounted centrally in the vehicle; not in forward line-of-sight) and it won't have a power cable dangling out. From what I understand the RNS does not have digital radio reception.

Again, it's back to more research on pros and cons. No rush.

Thanks Gareth. I'll check out the wash/cruise/meal suggestion!

Basically the 1k price is worth it only for full integration with the car (steering wheel controls and MFD) and the fact it is "oem" equipment.

It doesn't re-direct you for traffic/roadworks and the maps don't update very frequently but it is also fitted with a 40gb harddrive.
