Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New Brisbane (Potential) Polo GTi owner...

    Hi All!

    Sooo.... a little about me:

Lived in Brisbane for the past 3 years or so and owned a string of turbo'd cars(Skyline/S15), as well as a couple of 'hot hatches':

    -1986 Daihatsu Charade Turbo
-1997 Daihatsu Charade w/ Charade Turbo engine swap
-2003 Daihatsu Copen w/ HKS DX30 turbo, custom exhaust and HKS intake kit
-1997 Daihatsu Charade w/ 4E-FTE Starlet Turbo engine swap
    -1997 EP91 Starlet GT Turbo (I had a thing for 1997 model cars, I think! )

I've pretty much got to the final stages of purchasing an '06 Polo GTi and I've been looking around the forums at the mods that other members have done to their Polo GTi's. It's so hard to choose what to do first!

Anyways, if all goes well, I'll be the proud owner some time next week, so I'll post up some pics.

Welcome to the forum. You'll love that Polo when you get it.
If you are going to go for more power, think carefully before you pick a tune. Consider the end result you are after and work backwards. That way you won't get software that won't handle the mods you want and you have to do things twice.

There's some quick Polo's on the forum. See if you can get a ride in them before making your mind up. There's a cruise on Sunday which might interest you.

    Cheers

    Gavin

      Hi Gavin,

      Thanks for the friendly intro!

Also, maybe you'll be able to answer the question I have... Do the Audi/Seat Cupra manifolds fit onto the Polo GTi 1.8T engine without any modification to the exhaust/turbo?

      Cheers,
      Lukas.

AFAIK all the exhaust manifolds are the same. So there'd be no benefit. There area few aftermarket manifolds that make a difference. vwindahouse is running one but most folk don't do them as the gains on an otherwise standard car aren't massive.

I was thinking more in terms of the availability of them as a supplement to a K04 turbo upgrade, so that's good to hear.

K04 would run off the standard manifold. It depends on budget though.

For me a front mount intercooler and dowpipe is the starting point. A K04 needs more supporting mods to get the best from it. 3 inch MAF, injectors and a fuel pump.

The software is pretty much a fixed cost regardless of what mods you do. So it makes sense to do the hardware first in my book.

              Thanks for the advice.

              So, with the downpipe:

              - is it another Seat-interchangeable part?
              - is it an easy fit?

There'd be no benefit from fitting any SEAT parts except the air intake to the airbox.

There's a few downpipes on the market. Not overly hard to fit, access is a bit tight though. Jmac of Alba European has fitted plenty and doesn't use a lift to do it usually.

Can you make it out on Sunday to the cruise? Starting in Samford?

You could check a lot of things out in one go.

                Gavin

Welcome. The VW's tune very differently to the Jap cars, be aware.

Have you priced a K04? Seem to be around a grand, plus tune and supporting mods.

                      Hey guys,

There's a slight possibility that I'll come on Sunday, but I don't want to make any promises just yet.

All kinds of craziness going on right now.

If I can make it, I'll be glad to come along.

Also, bit of an update - went and took it for a test drive tonight and... Faaaaaaaar out, these cars have some serious balls! Tell me, does anyone know how one of these bad boys lines up against, say, a WRX or the like?

Polo needs a bit of work to be good on the track.

If you want to play properly I'd suggest:
                        Coilovers
                        Sticky tyres
                        Swaybars
                        Chip
                        Better brake pads

If you want to make good times, add:
K04 or other turbo and tune to suit
                        Intercooler
                        Exhaust work
                        Wider wheels
                        LSD
                        Injectors
                        Fuel reg
                        Intake work
                        Better brakes

The Polo has torque, but not the greatest power. Fwd is a limitation, but not a show stopper.

Have a look at the track thread in the Polo section.

Sweet, that's a good start! I'd say it won't ever see track time, but I want something with some good solid power and good handling.

Even the stock standard one that I drove last night had enough of both to keep me happy... for now. >

Wow...just...wow! I'm absolutely smitten with my purchase. These things are just a beauty to drive!

Looking likely that I'll be there on Sunday, guys...
