Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi, from Ireland

Hi, been snooping around the site for the last few days wondering what to write here. My name is Gerard and Im from Co.Cork on the South coast of Ireland. I work as a HV cable jointer/ linesman/electrician. My main VW love is the mk2 Golf, but love all things VW. I've owned mk2's for 20 years and have one particular one for 15 of those. At the moment I have four mk2's , a driver , a 2.0 16v (rough !) , my 15 year old ongoing project and an almost there rhd G60. I also have a transporter syncro from work and a mk5 GTI as a daily. I like what Ive seen of your thriving community there which is far larger than I had expected. Its more than 10 years since I was in Australia and maybe being part of what you do there can keep me in touch with a country and people I loved through a passion for VW's we all enjoy. Thanks.

    Regards, Gerard.

Gerard, my wife's from Monaghan, last year she and I went for a drive round the west coast of Ireland. We flew into Shannon from the UK, so that would have been the closest we got to your neck of the woods. We hired a MkV 1.4L Golf from Budget in Shannon. Those Budget guys were REALLY laid back, I did a visual inspection of the Golf and reported some issues but they didn't seem to be interested. Spent a few days in Killiloe with my wife's sister before heading off. Your's is a lovely country, absolutely steeped in history.

@ GoLfMan : Thanks mate , I sure have , mostly the G60(even a build thread) and a few of the driver. the other 2 are not really up to
photos but Ill stick some up anyway, when I figure out the proper part of the forum to put them in !
So the mk5 kicked things off ??? Nice car alright , thought things had changed as I couldnt find a vw scene there in 1999.

@ anthony : Thats great news , seemed everyone that time was into HSV Holdens and Falcon V8's or some Japanese stuff . I like all
those cars too but my preferance was always VW's.

@Frankenstrat : Monaghan is a bit away from me alright, The West coast is stunning , especially if the weather is good. Killiloe is a
beautiful town, used to get a great Sunday lunch in a hotel there. I think the whole country is laid back and even
more so with the state of the economy here !Wondering if you are from Germany (Flag ? ) or if its a VW thing
Either way may I return the compliment. Spent a year in Austrailia and loved it & got to drive the G60 around Germany
last year (Wolfsburg & the Nurbergring of course ) loved that too!
