Hello everybody,
I'm very happy to be officially part of your community for I've always had air-cooled VWs of some description, Split-screens, Beetles etc, but inevitably, as one ages, one becomes becomes attracted to such modern luxuries as power-steering, air-conditioning, diesel grunt and efficiency. Sad, but true. So, last December I bought a brand new MY10 T5 SWB Transporter 103kw TDI and I'm loving it. I had a little problem with a valve of some description (ERG?), but the unlimited KM warranty kicked in and my dealer looked after me. This 103kw turb-diesel is a revelation; it has plenty of torque, its quiet-running and amazingly fuel efficient (SYD-BNE on one tank!!). I bought the vehicle with the intention gearing gear it up for travelling (mostly surf-trips along the NSW coast) and although I like the idea of a complete camper, my budget would never extend to a full-fit out so I'm going to be satisfied with just a timber sleeping platform under which I can slip my boards, wetsuits and camping equipment while having a mattress on top. I thought I might document the process so as to share my experience with the community and as such would appreciate any feedback from anybody who has similar intentions or has experience with conservative, no-frills conversions.
