Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Newbie with Mk4 Golf 1.8 20V in black

    Hi all,

Just wanted to say hello to fellow Golf nutters who have finally reaised their dream. Meant to do this earlier but some idiot contarctor ripped out my phone line along with 800 others and it only got fixed late yesterday from Last Friday. Try going without the internet and email for 5 days - its hell.

Both myself and my wife have wanted one of these since we were much younger but the price has kept us away. We have always had VW's but kombis and never a golf. Love the safety, size, performance and looks of this model.

It even has those factory BBS copy alloy wheels.

I have just cleaned all the gutter rash off them.

We used to have another hatchback made by Toyota and now I am glad we crashed it so we had to buy a "new" car. The Golf is so far ahead of the Toyota it is amazing and its only 6 years newer.

    Love it.

    Cheers,

    Scott

We have just experienced our first major issue after owning this vehicle for only 1 month.

My wife went down to my Daughters swimming carnival with my Daughter while I worked yesterday. She went down to Woy Woy with no trouble but then the car wouldnt start (battery seemed flat even though there was no previous sign of problems with the battery). When the NRMA came out they jump started the car and the Golf ran roughly from then on with lower than normal idle (rough) then would go and then suddenly cut out and nearly stall then hesitate for a bit then go again. Did this for the whole trip back and did it again after trying to start it last night then again all today.

However, after fiddling with the MAF sensor and removing the interior door card, I had to move the golf back to its car port for the night and the golf started, idled properly adn drove brilliantly around the block again with no troubles.

Could this "limp" mpde be caused by a dodgy or wet MAF sensor (it has rained all week)? or possibly caused by the NRMA jump start?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Scott

I know a friend had their astra jump started and it went into limp mode. After driving adriving home they reset the ECU by diconecting the battery for 1min.

Limp mod on the mk4s needs the battery disconnected for 10min+ i think, then needs a ~30min so drive to start 'taking on driver data' again.
If it drops back into limp mod during or after the 30min drive id take it to someone to scan.

It fixed itself. A Day later she's purring again.

Must have been the dead battery and the jump start that caused it.

I took it to the mechanic who hooked it up to his lap top computer and cleared all the old faults - took it for a short drive and tested the fault codes again - none turned up.

The last code was aparently a faulty ignition key code.

I also found after checking with the wife that she was sitting for ages with the CD on, interior light on and had the indicator on meaning one soide headlight and rear tail light were on. This probably flattened the battery.

Tested that also and thats all good - alternator charging well too.

          All is well again.

Wife has hopefully learnt her lesson.

Thanks for the replies - very informative.

          Cheers,

          Scott
