"you stole the words from my old mechanics mouth".
In fairness it is the best 4cylinder car I've owned. First high powered car with an amazing ride and interior quality. BUT when the tech guys can't diagnose an injector of the way out and then mis diagnose it with a Gear Box issue that could have cost me a lot of money, my love of the car can only go so far.
I'm glad but equally sad to say I pick up my WRX 2011 this weekend and got a reasonable trade so it's time to say goodbye to my good GTi mate.

      Ok, a little clarification

If the transmission is in D2, then you can move forward and "creep" or maybe that should be "crawl". So far, my transmission has only ever selected D1 when stationary and when getting moving. Once a certain speed has been reached, D2 will engage and will stay that way until I come to a stop, when D1 will be engaged.

You are right in that you cannot force D2 to engage unless a certain speed has been achieved.

So, you can "creep" or "crawl" as long as you are in D2 (i.e. the transmission control selects D2).

It should change to D1 at about 10kmh and up at about 15kmh I think. It's been a while since I've driven it in peak hour.
