Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC newbie just got Ps

    hey everyone,

well i just got my p plates and dad has ordered me a white mk6 golf gti. options include 18" detroits, mdi, upgraded media player, leather and sunroof.

plans for mods include: carbon fibre wrap on mirrors, roof and rear diffuser, lower on coilovers, gramlight 57S pro with titanium tip rims, golf R front and rear lights. new paddle shifters, tint. already bought a set of hella supertone horns - i hear these are hard to locate in australia and i have a mate with a fair few of them, so let me know if anyone is interested

i plan to buy the small mods and keep them until i take delivery of the car so i dont have to wait for parts.
the car is around a 3 month wait so i thought id join this forum beforehand so ill have the hang of it in time for delivery.

In Australia "learner" drivers have an "L plate" (black L on yellow background that they must display on their car, in most states) and must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver. Once they meet a certain number of hours (and minimum age) they can do a computer and driving test and get their "provisional license". In many states this is a red "P" on a white background, and just like the L's, they have to display it on their car (in most states). After 12 months they progress to a green "P" plate and then have that for 24 months. If they manage to get through those 36 months without losing their license, then they progress to their full license. There are speed, alcohol, and penalty limitations whilst on L's and P's.

From the VicRoads' website...'A person is not permitted to drive the vehicle at any time for social reasons or reasons unrelated to work. In these cases the onus is upon the driver to provide evidence to the police that his or her driving is work connected.'

You will have to prove this if you are caught.

Also, you'd just better hope that you don't crash because you won't be covered. Is it really worth it?

Yeah... purchasing a car which is illegal for you to drive is one thing. But then "tricking it up" with carbon fibre-look parts, lowered suspension, flashy wheels, and attention grabbing horns, doesn't really sound like a smart way to "fly under the radar". But hey... that's just my thoughts

These cars are on the banned list for a reason.

the banned list was a bunch of bull****. before the new system came in, infiniti G35's, Tvr's aston martin 6 clinders, vw passat 3.2, 3.6l were all allowed. now the new list has got a bit smarter but still pretty stupid.
why can you drive a jetta 147 with an application but not a GTI?? same engine and all. similar performance
why can you Drive a R32 in that case??
and why is the e 3.6l passat allowed, when a r36 is banned.
                      this list is stupid.

funny note is falcons and commodores are the hoons choice of car, and the popo love the same cars. ironic huh

I was lucky to miss all these laws... Open licence at 18, and no car restrictions... Sux to be a nipper these days!!
