Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Thanks for having me

    G'day folks,

I purchased my first VW, 2.0Tdi DSG Comfortline, in 2006 and have had enjoyed 220,000k's of hassle free motoring. Other than general consumable style replacements, I have only ever had an issue with the two fans, solved by replacing them.

No modifications with the exception of the factory body kit, tow ball and piggy back ecu; spent far too much money in the past on vehicles and really only wanted a reliable daily driver, but the promise of significant torque increase had the cheque book open.

This thing is perfect for it's intended purpose, +/- 1000k's per week of highway driving.

I have a need to know understanding of the operation of the various systems, as I no longer have the time to muck around with it anyway, but generally have a reasonable knowledge of mechanical "stuff" and performance tuning.

I'm at a cross road and hope to get a bit of assistance here as I am experiencing an issue and am wondering whether I should just trade the thing and relieve the problem.

I've read about 3 pages of threads regarding the DSG (I think) issue I am experiencing, and aside from reading a number of posts that suggest one should just read the search pages, haven't come across a similar issue.

Do I just keep reading or is better to describe the symptoms I'm experiencing and obtain some learned opinions?

Patience is a virtue but I don't possess a lot of it.

The car went to the dealer today and they are suspecting the box needs to be replaced, but need to check with VW about the problems.

    The symptoms:

    1. Only occur when warmed up, can drive about 25kms before starting to experience the issues.
    2. Initially it was a shudder in 2nd gear that I could drive around without issue.
    3. Shudder has progressed to all gears and only occurs above 2000rpm.

It kind of feels like it is dropping out of gear and picking up the same gear, if it was a petrol car though I'd probably be checking spark plugs and ignition as it feels like a miss more that a gearbox issue.

Quite frustrating, would anyone have any clues?

Interestingly today I knocked it into neutral by accident and low and behold there is a massive flat spot at 2000rpm which is a little puzzling. I suspected it may have been the piggyback ECU so unplugged it, now I have the same problem but at a different point in the rev range, which makes me wonder whether I am in fact dealing with a gearbox issue at all. Vehicle is running very roughly this evening, which is interesting and leading me to further suspect this might be an engine issue rather than a gearbox issue.

Anyone have any clues here or experienced similar issues?

So today I roll up to the lights after a 100k drive and the damn thing is hunting at idle like a blown v8, which leads me further to believe this is an engine issue. She's off to the dealer tomorrow to have another thorough look, so here's hoping they can resolve the issue.

Is this forum very inactive these days, or was there something I said; it seems odd that with 74 views to this thread no-one has chimed in.

Folks do not, repeat, do not replace your Mechatronics unit, DSG or Clutch Pack without first having the technicians check the loom between the injectors and the main loom plug.

As I suspected the issue wasn't in fact gearbox related at all, there was a misfire on injector number 4 caused by the loom that intercepted the ECU and piggyback computer. The tech explained the loom between the injectors and the main ECU plug has been somewhat problematic in their experience and thankfully this was exactly what was causing all of my issues.

Beastie drives like a new one, albeit with significantly less torque and power, time to replace the piggyback loom!

This may not be the panacea that everyone needs when experiencing DSG symptoms but for goodness sake please ask the service tech to check the loom, as it's a $200 fix rather than a $10000-$20000 fix, and manifests itself as a DSG issue.
