  • VIC Hi VWwatercooled

Hi everyone, just bought my first VW, a brand new MY10.5 R36 Wagon. Quite enjoying it so far, it's a very nice place to be, but am obviously going easy on it with <100km on the clock (I'm not sure I quite buy into the "it's run in from factory" thing).

I've posted a couple of things on here already but mostly lurked for awhile doing pre-purchase research. Nice forum and great info.

    Congrats man! Very nice car.

Don't baby it though. Wait until your oil temp is up to "running temp" (which is ~88 on my Golf R depending on the ambient temp) and then drive it how you always intend to! Modern cars are different to old cars, so if you don't work in those piston rings early, they'll never be worked in. Search around these (and other) forums for some more info/opinions on the subject

Thanks for the advice. I have taken it up to around 4.5K using mostly manual mode, and varied the engine revs as much as possible, and done a bit of engine braking after winding a gear up from ~2K-4K then repeating a few times until I run out of road or someone comes too close. I haven't really used more than about 70-80% throttle though, but it was my first night in the car. Its hard to really know just how to run in the engine properly due to the different schools of thought, but varied revs, moderate-80% throttle and winding it up in a gear then engine braking seem to be reasonably common directives.

I would like to drop the oil well before the first service though! I don't want all that crap in my oil for 15K kms.

Congratulations on your R36! They are a nice car.
I'm with you on the oil especially this new light runny stuff that feels like coolant in the bottle!
