Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • G'day! a new VW fan searching for the right car

I don't own a VW at the moment, but have owned several over the years. My first car was a 72 Superbug, and I've owned a couple of III and IV Golfs along the way and now it's time to get back into another VW.

I've enjoyed reading the posts and am impressed with how helpful people seem to be here. I'm currently in the market for a 2nd car for our family. Must be a VW, have 4 doors and be under $20k and have a bit of poke. Any suggestions?

Hope to meet up with some of the Brissy mob sometime....

Hm, Polo GTI would be a bit small, maybe a MkV non GTI?

    Would you consider a S3?

      Welcome mate.
Looking forward to seeing what you go for.

Could probably pick up a Bora for that coin.

        Thanks Guys.

Hard to find anything here in QLD...but I've found something in Melbourne. Does anyone know of a mobile Pre-purchase inspection business that would use VAGCOM? I'm not sure if your standard mob would do this?

Failing that, has anyone had any experience with a good Pre-purchase mob? The car is in South Melbourne.

        thanks

Hi, from Adelaide, when I helped buy a car from all places, Queensland, we had the local auto club do a check on it, RACV in Melbourne, also try Google, this site came up, "http://www.vehicle-inspection.com.au/", more where there, ask if they have some one who knows their VW's.

              Hi,
I'm sure Jimmy Mac (Jmac) in this forum will be able to help out with pre purchase inspection.

Jimmy is in Brisbane though, not Melbourne.

Thanks...but really wanted something witha VW badge.

Looks like it will have to be a Bora 4Mo. Anyone want to sell one with less than 100k klms and a good service history?

OK, I'm still looking....I need some opinions...

I've looked at quite a few Boras and Mk IV GTi...some have been rubbish, some have been ok, but they're still an old car. Regardless of mileage, the components are getting old and tired, plastic bits are breaking down and that means $$$.

I've started noticing that there are a lot of Mk V 2L Sportlines around in my price range with about 90k+ klms. I haven't driven one, but Ive started thinking that they could be an option. I like the shape, the car is newer and it is supposedly a sporty version, most I've seen have been ex-lease, so they have a full service history....so how do they go? I know it wont go like a VR6, but are they a slug? Can a chip or remap do anything? Reliability? I realise that the easiest way to find out is to drive one, but I was hoping to hear from someone who may own a Sportline...

I guess my real question is...do I buy Bora which is old (potentailly expensive) but goes OK...or do I buy a newer Golf, with similar Klms that mightn't go as hard?

                      opinions?
