Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC POLO vs. GOLF

Hi, I'm a female 18 y.o soon to get my P's and looking for my first car.
Looking to get a 2nd hand Golf but noticed that Polos of same age/kms are cheaper
can anyone help with things I might need to know when trying to decide?

Hey Jessi, welcome to the forums.

The Polo is a smaller car than the Golf, and as such is a "lower model" in the VW family. Hence the cheaper cost. Depending on the engine and gearbox, it can have lower fuel consumption than the "equivalent" Golf, as well as lower servicing costs. Whilst the Polo is smaller, it may still be perfectly suitable for you, so you may as well take a look. My tall friends (up to 6'5") never had an issue fitting it my 2008 9N3 Polo GTI, and there was enough space to put luggage for my holidays away.

Having said that, I'm not in a Golf again (though not for space or size reasons).
So have a look and see how you go.

One thing I should note since you're in VIC and on your P's. Several of the Golf and Polo models are turbo-charged, or even Turbo AND Supercharged. So make sure that the model you are interested in is either on the "approved list" or that you can obtain an exemption for it from VICROADS prior to purchasing it.

    Good luck.

Just to let you know, all the polo 9n3s can be driven but you need to send for an exemption for the GTi. Stupid P plate rules. Also any of the 1.4TSI engines in the golf (118kw) can be exempt when applied for =]
