Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Stupid question?

    FIRST POST!

I'm 22yo student from melbourne starting a phd next year, dying for my first car and looking to buy in 2012. Hopefully either a Polo 77 TSI or GTI depending on how frivolous I'm feeling (or rather how stupid? ).

Well then, as a newbie I thought I should ask a question which has probably been answered before...

Why is that what appears to be all VW's from the past 5 or so years have one red and one clear brake light/reflector on their backsides. Why not both red or both clear?

I kind of assume this is a law thing rather than a design choice - VW aren't exactly known for unsymmetrical cars!

Had a feeling it was euro design. Saw it on an alfa yesterday. My question really though is why? Why have one clear, one red?

One is reverse (kerb side) the other is rear fog light.

You want to buy in 2012 but when do you want to take delivery of your car? Just be mindful that some members here have recently put down a deposit for their GTI and will not be getting delivery until next year. Others were lucky enough to snag cancelled orders. So if you order in 2012, there might be a possibility you won't be getting delivery until 2013 (not saying this will happen but it could be a possibility).

Go to a dealer and find out when delivery will be - if it will be a one year wait, then perhaps put down a deposit now if you are able to, then you will get the car next year.

I've been following the forums since the GTI was announced and have seen all the disappointment... 12mth wait is just unbelievable. Have been pondering the question of when to order. Luckily I don't need a car desperately. I'm planning to (finally) move out at the end of 2012/start of 2013 and would like to have sorted out a car by then. So worst case scenario of order jan2012, delivery early 2013 isn't the end of the world.

Hypothetically, if you find a car with your spec during the wait period (let's say it's a cancelled order or something) is there any issue canceling your own order and picking up one available earlier?

P.S. If one light is a fog and one a reverse light, does this mean you only have one reverse light?

              Yes, that is correct.
