Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Seeking a Mk 5 TDI

    Hello,

I am looking at purchasing a MkV TDI in the next few weeks.

I notice that the older MkV's (2004, 2005) list a 1.9 TD, but the newer (2007) MkV's have a 2.0 TD. Was the engine upgraded, and does the 2.0 produce any noticeable increase in power/economy? Should I be concentrating on the 2.0 only, or there isn't much difference?

    Carsten

BTW I am not really a 'new' Dubber. Had 3 Golf's in the past - Mk1 Golf (Australia), Mk2 Golf (New Zealand) and Mk3 Golf (Canada). Time for another.......

The 1.9 is an entirely different engine, and the later 2.0 is a DRAMATICALLY reworked unit. That said the 1.9 has been thoroughly investigated and sorted out, as it is the main unit available in the USA, so pretty much anything aftermarket can be sourced from over there. 2.0 is a Euro and Aust only, so less options. For a stock engine the later 2.0 had far better power delivery, similar fuel economy, but things like intercoolers and turbos were extremely different. Personally I'd recommend a 2.0 if you want any sort of power at all in stock form in a MKV Golf or bigger, as it's no lightweight. The 1.9 runs well in the lighter Polo.

If your budget can steetch to it, look for the Pacific edition, a later MKV 2.0 103 kw TDI that came stock with a lot of nice upgrades, and at a similar Golf Sportline price. Bang for buck in MKV form, it'd be the pick of the bunch.

    Happy hunting!

Stock is the operative word - the 1.9 can be made to run almost as powerfully as the 2.0 with a simple ECU tune (for as little as A$700). There is a member of this forum currently towing a pretty large campling trailer from SA to WA who chose the 1.9 + ECU tune to save himself several thousand dollars.

Of course the 2.0 can be powered up by a similar degree if an ECU tune is applied i you're interested in more power.

Definitely get a Pacific if possible as VW loads these with extras to keep buyers from holding out for the new model in the last year or so of a model's life.

concentrate more on the 2.0tdi which i have got which has a much higher power increase and much more torque and i have driven a 1.9tdi and i find them rough compared to the 2.0tdi which i think which is more refined overall and a much better package and the resale value on the 2.0tdi are higher and more demand and just modify it cosmetically and a chip and its as good as a gti.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll focus on the 2.0!
