Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW first VW.....MKIII. got a few questions, and a big gday :D

    gday fellas! (ladies?)

bought my first golf tonight, it was for sale from this forum actually. the green one from gosford.....coilovers and porsche rims and what not.

anywho, i have a few queries for you lot that know a lot more than i.

the motor sounds like a subaru motor once they have done 200 000km.....but car was recently serviced, should i be concerned? clutch pedal feels limp for first half of pressing it in, and when it is in, i can hear noise, like sand is being ground between the clutch plates or something? and the coilovers are rather harsh, short of changing susp setup, is there anything i can do to alleviate this? trim bump stomps perhaps?

thats all i can think of atm, but is there anything else i should be aware of with these cars? i have only ever owned r31s before this.....so all this fwd and european stuff is very foreign (no pun intended lol) to me!

    thanks guys in advance!

      Welcome Hicko!

All the cool kids hang out at the Mk3 section haha, so I think your questions will be more receptive if you posted up the same questions there.

Which engine does your Mk3 have? The clutch setups are different between the 8V and the VR6. Do you know what brand the coilovers are? The cheaper Hottuning/Tuningart branded ones are known to be a little on the harsh side as they're not damper adjustable and while they allow you to go low, they don't quite have the suspension travel as you've already guessed. Trimmed bump stops will help (I've trimmed mine to 1/3 of their length) but if it still feels like it's bottoming out, your best bet is to raise it a little bit, buy better coilovers/cup kits, or just ride it out.
      Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
      Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

        Hey mate,

        Fellow Mk3er here from Warnervale.

I'd be servicing it again yourself for piece of mind. I would go plugs, oil, air + oil filters.

Ive heard cheaper coilovers can be quite harsh, especially on the quality roads of the Hunter/Central Coast.. I'd say either revert to standard suspension or go high quality coils..
