Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW T5 Manual Gearbox's

Just wondering if there is any truth to people saying the manual gearbox's in the T5 models are prone to failing and it very expensive to replace.Ive also heard similar with the auto box's.
I know the price would be up there if it was to go bang.
    Any feedback will be cool.
    Thanks

the only issue i have dealt with a few times with the manuals is the stub shaft gets rusty and strips out and ruins the cv in the process, not too bad to fix as the gearbox can stay in the car. But still not too common i think ive done 2 out of the many many t5's i work on.

Ok Thats re assuring to hear. There is always a lot of talk bagging out certain cars but the truth is always the best.
Have you done many Fan belts on the T5 diesel? What is the best way to approach it? It looks like a tricky bit of work.lol

no fan belts on any of them, the 2.5 has no belts at all and the 1.9 serp belt isn't very hard at all. The 2.5 does have couplers between components which are all gear driven but they don't need to be replaced to often, roughly same periods as timing belts.
The 2.5 is good because it has no cambelt (unlike 1.9) and more power, although replacing the couplers all at once is a little bit of a job but again not too bad.
