Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC To Polo GTI or not to... That really isn't a question...

    G'day.

First post to kick off. I'm basically doing my research. Always had pretty standard upgrade cars but now i'm getting out on the road with work and going to want something that'll be fun on the hwy and easy in the city.

Price is keeping me from a Golf GTI but not from looking at the Polo GTI.

I'm looking for a 2008 model, hopefully with leather and sunroof but i'm not liking my chances just yet. Seems they have either 1 or the other, or if they have both it's an older model or something.

So any help with knowledge or perks or problems would be great. Or if you have seen the Polo i'm chasing let me know!

Looking forward to hopefully having one in my possession soon!

    Cheers,

    Trev

Is the hole in the roof a known issue i should look for or be aware of when inspecting possible purchases??

          Hey Trev,

I recently (Wednesday) picked up my 08 GTI (red, cloth).
I wasn't fussed if I got a leather or cloth one and to be honest I'm quite impressed with the quality of the cloth interior (the design as well) and I'm glad I won't have to be caring for it as much as a set of leather seats.
As you're in Melbourne, and if you feel like making the drive up to Kyabram, I know that red one up there with leather can be had for $17K. It's a city car in the country and they're keen to see it gone (just don't buy their story where they supposedly took it as a trade thinking it was a Golf and subsequently paid too much).

Let us know how you go!

I used my sunroof every day and never had a problem with it, be it leaks or motor issues. As much as I couldn't justify the $2.5k to get it as an option when new (I too bought mine second hand with leather + sunroof), I definitely feel it's worth a little more when shopping around for a second hand Polo.

That said, leather is an absolute must. Wears better, looks better and includes heated seats (I never understood the fuss until I started using these in winter).

That said, my personal opinion is the cloth interior looks horrid.

              So i'm back!

Bflat, i have you to thank! I ended up taking that little 3-4 hr drive and refused to leave unless i was driving it home. I've been in sales for 10 years, don't worry i didn't pay the 17k they wanted.

So i'm LOVING the GTI! So much fun! But it's time to start looking at a few little updates. I've been recommended to get GIAC chip. Is it one chip to rule them all?

I've noticed as well how much it likes to corner. My old man had some sway bars and an anti-lift kit fitted to his WRX and raves about the difference. Any feedback on this for a Polo GTI?

Only other thought would be an exhaust!!!

              Bring on summer cruising!!!

see, this is where you'll find there is a problem.

                  you're from melbourne.

summer here is hot, very very hot.

one "cruise" with the vic / melb crew, and you'll soon find that tyres, brakes, engine oil temps etc dont last very many corners into our "summer cruises" lol.

welcome aboard! now, what you GOTS TA DO is get yourself down to tim's (username tim from dub addiction 's workshop) on a friday night and have a good old banter with the vic crew - BIIIIG turnout last friday, the mood is casual and everyone is a top bloke, and there is a HUGE wealth of knowledge for the picking.
