Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Those who frequent the AVD forum will recognise me by my user name. Been involved in the VW scene for 20 or so years, but until a venture into the dark side via a GTI golf 12 months ago have been pure air cooled fan. Since then I've been off and on looking at buying "something" to replace my POS 2005 falcon. What I need is a commute car that for 4 annual leave weeks per year can carry suitcases and kids athletics gear, or camping gear. Simple ask huh.

I have mega beefs with the VW marketing machine. They seem to make weird packaging decisions.

I love the look of MkVI Golf hatch but I dont think it has enough room for me. Enter the golf wagon. Though its a golf V underneath it looks like a golf VI, except it has a butt ugly rear end. Why didnt they just whack the hatch rear styling on the wagon? I was prepared to live with that, only for some reason you cannot get a manual 118TSI. Why? Stupid. So that brought me back to the hatch for a while, but still have nagging feeling that it is too small. So then we move on to the Jetta. And it has ugly front end styling. To my nowhere near expert eye the jetta looks like a MkV golf that has been sat on by a rhino. Is the Jetta based on a MkV? It comes in 118 manual so this means that there should be no technical reason why a 118 TSI wagon cant have a manual box.

I think I am in the minority in that I dont like the DSG. I think it is a brilliant box most of the time, the best auto I have ever driven. However there is that half second delay from standstill before it decides to get going, and also a half second delay shifting into second on slow speed corners. It seems that for all its advantages over conventional autos, it is worse from a standing start. I've driven a passat and 3 different engined golfs with DSG and they are all the same. Instead of the sluggish start in a conventional auto you just get no start. That would drive me nuts in long term. Dont mean to knock anyones car in my first post, I'm just overly sensitive to things like that.

So here's my choices as far as I can see.
90TSI wagon with less power + ugly rear.
    118TSI Jetta with ugly front.
    118TSI hatch with no space.

Not happy. Is anyone aware of model upgrades in the near future?

Other things that annoy me: Why are the colours red, white, 4 or 5 shades of grey? Why are alloy wheels standard on 90TSI wagon but extra on 90TSI hatch? Why is Polo GTI DSG only? Why do some models get the DSG shifter on steering wheels but others on the stick? Steering wheel is much better.

There ya go, my first post is a whinge.
Hopefully when I settle on a car I'll be more pleasant

    Chris

argh, went on vw germany website and they have 118tsi wagon in manual. So that confirms it is physically possible, just no willpower from the aussie distributors. But I'm not complaining anymore, it seems NZ doesnt get a 118tsi OR manual anywhere in the range.
