Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Another Adelaide TIG

First post. This diesel auto Tig is our first European car - we've had Japanese 4wds lately. Very impressed by the quality and the gadgets! I've owned a lot of landcruiser diesels before but this is the first small common rail diesel.

It was bought second hand 2 weeks ago. First reg 3/2009 and 35,000k. Came with Silver paint, black leather, comfort pack, offroad button, and a towbar. If it sounds familiar then maybe someone here owned it before us!

We bought it because it was the only second hand one here in Adelaide and I gather the delivery on new Tigs are out to 9 mths now because of the update. Also we figured we saved a few $$ by buying used.

I've always done my own servicing and intend on doing the same with the Tig. Oil looked rather black considering last service was only 3k ago, so I bought some filters and that really expensive ($123 + tax) synthetic VW oil from Solitaire and changed the oil, oil filter and fuel filter today. Filter costs were very reasonable. Thanks to Transporter and the other helpful people on this site, it was all easily done. Fuel filter had darkened a fair bit and there were a few drops of water in the bottom of the housing - primed it with the Ign switch 10 times (to be sure, to be sure) - still got a little air in as it cut out soon after starting but went fine after I reprimed it.

Probably take another few weeks to read the manual and figure out how all the gadgets work!

    I enjoy this site

    Cheers
    Phil

      Welcome Phil

There are cheaper alternatives to the VW oil such as Penrite, Fuchs and elf branded oils

Thanks Maris - date is in the diary. Makes a change from the 4wd club "boots and bonnets" that I'm used to. I was looking at how the vehicles are judged and I reckon I could do the opposite - turn up with a Tig that was wearing a set of muddies had dust through the inside and a heap of locusts over the front.......

          Thanks Ben,
I priced the other VW507.00 oils before I went to the dealer - the Shell Ultra Extra 5W30 seems to be available at the usual places for $80, but seeing it has 12 mths warranty left I thought I'd best have the genuine oil this time with a receipt to prove it. Next change will be cheaper! I'll always use genuine filters.
          Cheers
