Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi All

Just joined up and I need your help.

I've had my silver "R" since May. Love it. Its the base R + leather and bluetooth. I ordered the 19" alloys but the car that turned up had the dark headlight housings (tick) but was shod with 18's. The dealer explained that someone in the VW machine had dinged up their demo "R" and swapped over my 19's for a new set of 18's. No spare 19's were available in the country. I took delivery (at a discounted price) on the basis that I could always find some decent non-OEM wheels later if I still wanted the 19's.

The problem is that I really wanted the 235 wide rubber on the 19's... but I now love the ride of the 18's on 40% profile tyres. I could go with 235x40 rubber but I'm not sure the 18x7.5" rims would handle it. I'm ok with getting a new set of alloys (I really like the OZ Superturismo LM's) but I'm not sure which spec to get.

Have I got rocks in my head???
Golf R:. reflex silver, man, leather, bluetooth, MDI, OZ superturismo LM's, KW V3 DCC coilovers, SuperPro sways, control arms & ball joints, HPA SS, Custom racing gear leaver, DBA rotors, Stage 2 tune (UGP) & CTS Turbo air intake & 3” downpipe.

Thanks for the link. I'm pretty sure the offset for the 18's is 45. Do you know the offset for the OEM 19's?

I went with 18" x 8 Talladega replicas with 45 offset, shod with 235/40 18. Wider than OE 18" at 7.5 wide. Ride is good and wider rims fill the guards nicely. MK V GTI

Cheers! I like the sound of that. The links you sent suggest an 8" wide rim is the right size for a 235 tyre.

So it looks like I'm in the market market for a set of 18x8's then. Better get looking at some pics!

I didn't get mine from them and I don't know what they are like to deal with, but Tempe Tyres stock VW replicas. They stock the exact same Talladegas (same part number) that I got. No probs with quality. The manufacturer has ISO9001-2000, ISO/TS16949, VIA, JWL and TUV certificates. FYI here is link

After a lot of thought I ended up with the 18x8 OZ superturismo LM's in Matt Grey. I'm still on the stock 225x40% rubber.

Next challenge is the suspension set-up. I'm thinking whiteline sways are the first thing.

Just added a set of KW V3 DCC coilovers. Only lowered the car by 5mm as I'm already struggling to get into my driveway. Love the result. The wife and kids don't get their teeth chipped while I can dial up the dampers via the DCC button or the cool iPhone app whenever I want to.

Haven't done the sways yet. Still on the cards but I wanted to see what the KW's felt like. Also thinking of a brake kit. Any feedback on brembo, alcon or ap racing would be appreciated.
