NSW GOLF TDI owner seeking help!

Hi,
I purchased my GOLF TDI in September 2004. I've had issues with the indicators for the last 3 years and nobody seems to know how to help me. When I indicate right, it shows left both on the dashboard and on the indicator panels at the rear. It happens sporadically. I'm loath to spend the money trying to get it fixed because each time I take it somewhere, I get a different answer (just guesswork, really). Any ideas?

Intermittent faults are a pain to track down. Are there any other circumstances when the fault occurs, such as headlights on, wipers going etc? I presume when it occurs the front indicators (including the one on the mirror) indicate right but the back one indicates left? There must be a short somewhere in the loom. Does the opposite happen when indicating left or is it only when indicating right?
