Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • SA Greetings from Adelaide!

    Hi everyone!

I've been a devoted BMW driver for the past eight years, but after driving VW GTI, Diesel GT and Octavia RS I changed my mind. Plus with insane car prices here in Australia that 335ci is waay over my budget. So this Monday I've got myself a '07 Jetta FSI Turbo. It was love at first sight. Picking it up this Friday, since the dealer still has to put new tyres on it.

However today, after driving my mate's awesome Octavia RS (wich is supposed to have the same engine and DSG gearbox), I went back to the dealer for another spin in my new car. Strangely enough the Jetta doesn't have the same "kick" as the RS... Am I being paranoid? After all an official VW dealer couldn't have sold me a car with a toasted turbo, right? Or could they have been stupid enough to fill it with 91 "regular"? Or is it just the difference between '07 and '10 models?

This is my first "normal" car since arriving to Australia two years ago (never mind the horrible Falcon I used to get around town), so I am very anxious..

Your feedback will be much appreciated, especially from mkV GTI and Jetta drivers!

    Cheers,
    Vas

When i got my car it didn't feel as punchy as i remembered on the test drive.
I believe the dealer ay have put 95ron in instead of 98ron, this could have been what happened with yours.

Also with the heat you are getting at the moment you are going to get a lot of heatsock and loss of power.

If you want that surge of power back, try 98Ron fuel and an ecu remap.

      Thanks for your reply!
You're right, this week was the hottest this summer in SA, this might have affected the performance. Anyway, I've got a certified preowned warranty as a part of the bargain, so I'll get the car checked at an independent VW specialist and try to get the seller to fix everything there is to be fixed. But the car has really low mileage and is spotless inside out, plus all the optional goodies so it should be sound mechanically as well. After all there still is a cool-off period, so I can swap it for a new TSI Polo too!

Thanks! It's a graphite blue with tan interior and 18" rims. Although Jettas are not exactly head-turners, this one looks very good! Will add some pics this weekend.

            Welcome fellow Jetta driver
The Octavia RS is pretty much the exact same package as the Jetta TFSI so not sure on why it would feel to have a better kick, i just checked the specs and they are exactly the same as the Jetta, engine output and performance times. Maybe its just one of those cars that feels faster than it is?
Anyway, you won't be dissapointed with the Jetta

That's a definite for 1.4 TSI cars. I drove A3, A1, Golf, Polo and Octavia with the same engine and they really feel quick. Jetta doesn't have those "sporty" features in the interior like recaros, paddle shifts, etc that the GTI and RS have, maybe that adds to performance perception.. Anyway, having owned a 260hp manual Astra with all the "hot hatch" merchandise inside and outside for two and a half years, convinced me that I don't really want all that in my daily drive. I want my car to go fast and not attract too much attention to it.

I think that is the sensible approach.

That's one of the things I love about the Jetta TFSI, it doesn't look like a performance car, but goes like clappers

It also helps being a red p-plater so cops don't look out for me, I can be a hoon in stealth
Driving two drunk friends home last night, they said my car looks nice on the outside, but goes like a jet, after I demonstrated launch control in sports mode
