Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Did you drive the Golf GTI? Much better sound I bias if you havn't noticed

    If you want noise find an R32 as mentioned before, fantastic!

      I went to the VW dealership but they seemed to insanely busy no salesmen gave me a second look. I'll probably go have another look on Monday. I much prefer the Skoda body shape and design to the Golf look though.

        My 2008 Hyundai i30 had immaculate panel fit and absolutely no rattles or squeaks. Beat my 2009 Jetta which shows small inconsistecies in the panel and door gaps (under very hard scrutiny) and has squeaks, not annoying enough to ask anyone to pull my baby apart to "try and make it better". No rattles.
        Love the Jetta (its the 1.6 diesel as was the Hyundai) for its natty DSG automatic; the way it warns me of near icing conditions with a chime-although I live in coastal Queensland, flat tyres (which it has dutifully done far too many times in my 9 months of ownership) and the main thing in comparing my previous car would be the difference in the handling (better of course)

          Mate I totally get where you are coming from, my last car was a boyhood dream BA GT Falcon. I did love that car for some time, and it's a must do to own a big fat V8 if you're into cars. After about 2 years of every WRX/Skyline wanting a drag/ intense cop interest / living at petrol stations I decided it was time to get over the ego and buy something a bit more subtle and refined. As much as I miss my GT's massive engine, sonorous exhaust note and insane top end, I couldn't help but recognise my GT in every cab I hopped in. Add to that GT stripes on every second XR6, well, it was time to move on.

          Being a tinkerer I went in to buy a twin charged TSI Golf, tried the uber GTI, and got talked into also trying the GT diesel. As it had the same fat low rev power I was used to, I was sold on it. Also, the fact it had exactly DOUBLE the range on a smaller fuel tank, well it made a lot of sense. I know the GTI is an awesome thing, but the ride was a lot choppier than the GT barge I was used to, and the only reason I didn't add the I on the end of the GT. I would at least try the diesel for it's similar to V8 engine traits, but if you want anything even slightly good sounding, well, probably best to stick to the gassers. The MK6 GTI is a very well put together car, and if I wasn't so heavily invested in being the diesel guy, I'd probably trade in the MKV GT for one. Certainly either would make an Aussie V8 look stupid in the twisties, and it never gets old to take a lap of your favourite mountain.

            i HAD A 2001 hOLDEN aSTRA SEDAN,AND THE interior was very plasticky.

            I then massively upgraded to a 2007 Jetta,which had a couple of rattles and squeeks,all fixed under warranty,and was then very quiet.

            It was written off by hail,and I test drove everything on the market a few months ago,but chose a new Honda Accord Euro,and 1 of the reasons for loving this model so much,was how silent it is.

            No squeeks,rattles,creaks,tingles,or vibrations.

            Very refined.

            Before making your final decision,go past your local Honda dealer for a test drive..........................the look is good,goes well,very comfortable,and extremely reliable.

              I'm with you Greg.

              Here's my other toy!


              Its been tricked up to around 385KW and sounds fantastic.

              Firming up the suspension is a great way of discovering some more creaks and groans. I hardly drive it these days, my wife does. I stick to my little S3.

              Having said that, since i threw some (expensive) coilovers in the S3, it creaks and groans a lot more.

              My next buy will be a smaller V8, around 4.2L

                Used to own a Commodore VT, loved driving it till someone ran up the back of it writing it off. Now own a Golf GTD, getting to love the diesel's torque and power. The TDI's 103Kw is nice but after driving the 125Kw GTD I was sold (actually drove the 125Kw TDI originally in the Audi MY10 A3 sportback, which I loved but the $$ didn't allow). Would definitely suggest giving the GTD/TDI (both if you can) just to compare and see what you think.

                Didn't think that I would own a diesel one but after driving them in Europe and testing a few they are actually quite nice and quite powerful.

                  Welcome to the forum, Iquite like the look of your Commy (no, I will not buy it off you ) but our cars do have a nice feel to them. The Mk4 is the only car I've owned (out of 6 VAG cars in the family combined) to not have any rattles... Those things are cemented together!

                    Yep, that acceleration is addictive! If you're after engine noise, the Skoda's not for you, it's quite muted but then again this car isn't aimed at the out and out enthusiast (in the same way that, say, a Golf R or Renault Megane RS250 is)... I bought my Octavia RS (wagon with DSG) about 10 months ago and I love it, mind you I've got two little 'uns which ruled out something like the Golf GTi (I need a big boot) and the wife drives it Mon-Fri so I needed something practical and safe and fuel efficient etc etc for the family but something that I could also have a hard punt in on weekends AND had an air of soilidity (in terms of build quality and fit and finish)... I hear you when you say that the Commodore just doesn't cut it for build quality (especially that interior)... my Skoda? no rattles, no squeaks, just a heck of a lot of fun every time I slide behind the wheel!!

                      And another vote. The instant response (not the torque - most turbos have heaps) anywhere in the rev range of an naturally aspirated engine just can't be beaten and having followed an R32 on a recent cruise, I think you will LOVE the sound. Plus the MkIV body shape is just really nicely balanced, especially with the R32 body kit and the AWD is nice in the rain (maybe get a Haldex so it will power oversteer).

                      Also, you won't have to worry about squealing supercharger clutches, melting turbos, clogging DPFs...

                        Hi!
                        Your Commodore actually looks nice. I know it's not the most popular opinion on this forum, but it's unfair to compare V8 rwd to 4cyl turbo fwd, or even the 6cyl awd compact like the R. It's just a different kind of driving experience (not that one's better or worse, just different). And if you're concerned about the interior quality - try out Audi. They make the best interiors. BTW, their 4.2 V8 with an alluminium block is brilliant and more fuel efficient then any other V8 I know of. My parents had an A8 4.2FSI quattro and managed 13-14l/100km IN THE CITY.
                        Have a look at some pre-owned A6 or S4s just to know your options.
