  • QLD Mini owner

    Hey all,

I'm actually proud to say that I'm a happy owner of an '07 R56 Mini Cooper Chilli. Since buying it I've fitted some coilovers and 6 pot front brakes amongst other bits and bobs. I really do love that car but as our 4 year old son gets bigger it's becoming less and less practical, so I'm beginning to give thought to selling it and buying something with a little more space. I have always been a fan of Golfs and don't know why I didn't give more consideration to one when I first bought the Mini. Needless to say I'm leaning very strongly towards one now and have been looking at the Gen 4s. (need to reduce some debt).

Haven't seen these in person but from what I can tell the picks are the sport and the GTi. Would I be right in saying this? Any other opinions would be appreciated, along with any leads on selling my Mini!!

    Hi and welcome!

The mk4's are indeed cheap, though getting a little long in the tooth now with the possibility of expensive repair bills with high kms.. The mk5 was apparently a big leap forward dynamically and early GTIs are fairly reasonably priced now (I'd be personally looking at a manual post warranty). Also mk5's are a bit bigger which may help with the fitting the family in situation.

There's plenty of tuning options for either a mk4 or 5 if you're keen to tinker, and there's a few good independent mechanics the locals will be happy to recommend if and when you join the VW clan.

    Cheers,

    -Phil

I'd say it comes down to money. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with MK4s and they are no more likely to require expensive repairs than any other car.
Buy a mk4 GTI that has history and I don't think you can go wrong. Also have a look at Audi A3s, same chassis and a bit classier I reckon.

Thanks for the advice guys. I used to get mk4's as rental cars when J went interstate for race meetings. I'd say they were base model but I was very impressed with them at the time. I'm really keen to check out the Gti's tho.

cjay, hi mate. Realistically, if it were 10 years ago I would be there in a flash, it's a bit hard to do with the family now particularly since my wife works Thurs nites and I've gotta get our boy into bed by 7.
