Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Diesel woes!
I have a Mk 5 GT Sport TDI Golf, 2008, done 115000 Ks, serviced by VW till the 100000 lapsed. The car stopped suddenly, restarted then spluttered to a stop. Issue apparently is the wiring loom and injectors, the inulation and plastic goes brittle, falls apart and also ruins the injectors! This has floored me, I would have thought VW was better than this! I have been told this is a common fault with the Passats, and the GT has the same motor (Not by VW of course) Has anyone heard of this? have they claimed on VW? was there a recall?
I am trying to claim on VW, not sure how I will go yet.
I strongly reccomend, if this fault has not happened to you yet, get it checked!. the repair dollars are big, over $6000 just in bits.

I have heard of this happening in the passat's but this is the first i have heard of it in a GT TDI.
Greg will be interested to hear this.

Are you covered by some sort of VW warranty or is this coming out of your pocket?

Yep it's a common fault, but not so much on the GT's for some reason. I believe the new, improved injectors are available as a swap, but it's still going to be pricey. It's not the injector per say, but the pizeo actuator that burns out. I know of two other GT's that have failed at or around the 100k mark, but about 15 Passat's now. I'm pretty concerned about it to be honest.

I'd go back to the dealer that had been servicing it and try your luck. They KNOW it's an issue, but will never admit it. At this stage I don't know of an aftermarket option, but I'm most certainly looking into it. Yes the Passat is just the GT engine with an extra counterbalancer to make it smoother for the more refined car, but that's it. For some reason they are failing left and right, but the GT's are surviving a bit better. Weird.

You need Umai Naa to chime in with what the options, and costs are, 6k seems more than a little expensive!!

VW have a 3 year factory warranty that will cover it, my problem is I didn't know about the factory warranty,(Different to normal warranty) I had it towed to a non VW outlet mechanic who diagnosed the issue, unfortunately he broke some of the loom gudies and wire tags because they were brittle, so VW said it was "tampered" with, my argument is this is a known fault, even the dealer admits it, and it broke before it was touched, and VW should at least cover the bits. The VW deal is sympathetic but said its up to VW, he has re submitted a claim stating all what I have said, still waiting for an answer.
I strongly advise anyone with a Mk 5 TDI GT to contact VW (or TDI Passat) and see if they are covered in the event of this happening. symptons can be rough running, loss of power, or in my case, just stopped!

Wow, I never thought I'd hear of this sort of avoidance from a company like VW. Like any car company though, they are there to make money, and if that means that you need to pay for the repair instead of them, I guess they're saving money aren't they? For so many failures, I'm surprised they're not on the front foot trying to remedy the problem at early services. It'll save a lot of headaches for a lot of people in the future!
