  • QLD 1999 Golf GL David E - Great car, and weekend drama!

    Hey all,

I want to start off on a positive note, and say that I love the forums you have set up here, and I'm loving my new Golf. I picked it up last week, and it's been a pleasure to drive.

However, I've had a couple of nasty surprises over the weekend that have left me bitter.

First up, I found out that the car was incorrectly advertised. The dealer said it was a 1.8L GLE, but it's actually a 1.6 GL. Silly me didn't pop the bonnet at the dealer or during the test drive, so when I did open it on Saturday I saw a big '1.6' written on the engine cover.

What do you think I should do about this? Can I go back to the dealer and ask for some money back? The contract is written for a 1.8 GLE, not a 1.6 and is therefore incorrect.

To add insult to injury, I was in a car accident on Sunday. I was on the Pacific Motorway outbound, and I saw a Commodore in the hard shoulder. The shoulder was narrow and so it was slowing traffic around it. I slowed as I approached it, but then they decided to pull into 100km/h traffic

I slammed on the brakes (the new ABS works very nicely) and narrowly avoided hitting them. I thought we were in the clear until a Camry piled into the back of me. We popped the hazards on and hopped out. A giant Hilux with a bullbar had wrecked up the back of the Camry, and they had hit me. I'm not sure who hit who first.

The car could be worse, the rear bumper is cracked up and will need replacing, but other than that it seems okay.

I'm now having to deal with the Camry's insurance company, and they are going to take a while to get statements of the accident and determine who was at fault.

    Just what I needed

That is a bummer, shame about both the events.
I would definitely be hitting up the dealer for false advertising of the product.

    Is the car driveable?
Hopefully we see you at one of the Brissie events (Thursday harry's or monthly euro meet.)

I've gotten in touch with the ACCC and I have the right to get an accurate description of the car. I'm going to request some money back on the car, and see what they say.

The accident was a bummer, but the car is still driveable. Fortunately it's just smashed up the rear bumper pretty badly. I got off much lighter than the Camry that got hit with a Hilux... messy!

Definitely interested in a meet. Would be great to get some advice on how to fix up the car and get it looking nice. Where do you guys meet up?

        Thursday - Milton then Harry's.

Monthly Euro meet is on next Friday (21st) at Northshore Riverside Park (Hamilton)

Hopefully the dealer will be sympathetic and the Insurance company will get your car back in shape quickly.

Wow. I thought I had bad luck when it came to my Golf, but that takes the cake.

You should be naming and shaming that dealer because that is absolutely disgraceful.

Common sense says they should be giving you the car on the contract rather than some of your money back. I'll be interested to see how it turns out for you.

            UPDATE:

Insurance company of the Camry who piled into the back of me will be paying the damage. Got to get a quote tomorrow, then take it to the assessment centre next Thursday, then get the bugger fixed. So much hassle...

The girlfriend's neck is pretty sore and we're seeing a physio. We're trying to get the CTP insurer of the other vehicle, but the information is hard to get. Their car insurer won't give us the info. Anybody know any good ways to find out the CTP?

              UPDATE 2:

The insurance company have agreed with the quote, and I need to get it booked in to be fixed. They quoted about $3k! Little bumps mean big bills.

Going through the CTP process at the moment, the other car was insured with RACQ. Spent 1.5 hours at the police station reporting the incident so that I could get an incident number for the claims form.

Got to organise a rental car and other stuff now, the fun never ends!

At least it is all going to be covered by someone else David.

Any word from teh dealer about the mixup?

Yes, very happy about that. I wouldn't like to be 3 grand out of pocket for this.

I spoke to the salesman on Monday, he said he'd have to forward it to the dealer principal on Thursday. Haven't heard anything yet, but I might chase them next week.
