The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • About to buy a 1998 VR6, A/C, Heater and Cruise Control not working!!!!!

    HI,

Very close to purchasing a 1998 black VR6 mk3 golf

The car has been lowered, suspension hardened, short shift gear box installed and leather interior with sunroof. However, the seller has advised me that the A/C doesn't work (and has been very unhelpful in diagnosing the problem) the heater is very weak, and the cruise control has not worked for some time.

I have been told that the heater coil generally packs up after about 10 years and the cruise control shakes loose and needs to be re-soldered. Does anyone have experience with these repairs? Any idea's what might be wrong with the A/C?

The car is in vg condition and looks great, I have offered $6500, is this a good deal considering the above problems?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

you should buy mine for $3000 with same problems and spend $4000 on the paint, fix the problems,wheels,etc..
If you are to fix all the problems with vr6's you may as well buy the cheaper one.
or look to buy one with no problems.good luck
    Mick

        Hey mate,

Be sure the heater core is not leaking or hasnt been bypassed as if can be an expensive (take a few hours) to have done by a mechanic.

They a/c may just need re-gasing and new seals.

I dont really know anything about Mk3 cruise control systems but someone on here might.

How many Km's does the car have? If its in good condition (Has the mods yoy listed) I beleive around $6000 is a fair price.

Remember the car is getting on 15 years so things will start wearing out etc.

          Thanks for the reply

I was thinking of repacing the heater core myself, just wondering if anyone had done this before, i.e. any specific problems that may assist me.

I understand that the a/c condensor generally needs to be replaced along with some seals and a re-gas, just wonding if anyone would know the appox cost of a condensor, without labour?

I did my heater core in half a day and i had never ever touched a mk3 before that...

Compressors are pricey!! about the $500 mark...

cruise control is a bit of a trickey one but if the solinoid is ticking inside the fuse panel then one of the vacuum lines are probably off under the P.S. front guard. If not could be a bad earth or a dodgey switch (know to stuff up).

GL with the purchase...they are mostly all getting to the older parts of their lives and will all need fixing in some way shape or form!
