Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • golf iv, 2001 gl man power/performance freeway driving - need advice!

    Hello and happy new year!
I own a Golf GL 1.6 man (2001) from new, good little car, no issues up until now, having one of those problems that's a little weird.. and it's only happening at high speed, freeway driving & primarily in 5th gear, although I did have an episode in 4th last night - I have experienced this issue on my last 3 trips to Camden which is approx. 1 hr drive on sydney's M5 freeway.

generally what happens is: after about 45 mins or so of freeway driving, with speed limits of between 80 and 110km, I experience a performance failure where by I feel a drop in power, the car all of a sudden feels like it's holding back or pulls back slightly and to compensate I accelerate a little more, but it won't give me any more power, my automatic response is to drop back to 4th, and then recover that way - then speed back up and shift into 5th.

I first experienced it a few months back which coincided with the temp gauge jumping around like crazy - my mechanic ( top guy , but not a vw expert) changed a part and fixed the gauge issue, assured me that my power issue was related, had not experienced the power issue again until recently when I got the car onto the open road - i am concerned..........as it's a little disconcerting when it happens, and my worst nightmare is a freeway breakdown!
can anyone point me in the right directio

Could be many things mate - could be air flow metering, fuel pressure, fuel blockage, vacuum leak, list is endless but as was suggested, sticking a checker on it to see what codes it is throwing will point you in the right direction. Where are you, there could be someone closer that can assist with that.

thank you for your reply, all that info is really helpful. I am at Ashfield however, happy to take a drive out to GTI performance - really nice people , recommended them highly - might give them a call this week to see if they are around - bad time of year for this stuff!
