  • WA fun and not so great drives

    Hi everyone,

Had a car out the back yard for the last 3 years that am finally getting back together.
It came on the train from Vic to WA and when it turned up in the drive the only thing that worked was the electric hood and the stereo - which was great for the kids to do karoke when friends came over...
Ripped everything apart, got a new interior, new hood, etc etc...
Had the bottom end redone, new pistons, liners etc.. then it all came to a grinding halt as the family took up most of my spare time.

Finally getting back around to doing her up, got the top end head machined and lifters, valve stems done...went to put it together and discovered the head was no longer the gti head that I took off. aghhh.. 900 bucks down the toilet as someone had halfhinched and swapped out for a 1976 1.6 gl. Nice thanks... I have my suspicions but life's tough !

Anyhows that's where i'm at at the moment, got a 1990 gti cabriolet that currently is undergoing complete restoration. Month by month as the paychecks come in though. Hopefully I'll have her up and running mechanically by the end of summer and trim etc all sorted and licensing etc for fall.

Previous cars in order have included..

VW Beetle 1303S - Silver all done up with boombox, bright blue interior carpet and more bling than any 16 year old
    Mini 1200
Morris Marina (bought it cause I missed the train one weekend - lasted 2 months then front disc seized onto wheel)
Fiat X/19 1.3 - Had to mount engine up on pine blocks when it fell on the driveshaft
Fiat X/19 1.5 - Great fun, best I've had to date, although mini came close
Ford Capri 2.9 - wallow, wallow, understeer - great fun whoops roundabout, give way sign, on roof, wall bang.
Ford laser - Crashed the ford couldn't afford much else
Mitsubishi Labero - Family friendly wagon
    Toyota Corrolla - as above
VW Golf - wanted a project car
VW Golf (The below 3 came with the one above, got em all while out walking the dog one morning - for 500 bucks ...bargain!)
    VW Golf
    VW Golf
Mercedez 300TE Brilliant affordable family mover - I finished complete engine rebuild and after 2 years of driving still has only done 129K since 1990
    VW Golf GTI - Pending

Well that's me. Currently looking around for a 'JH' top end block for the 1990 GTI to replace the one that got nicked. Might be easier for me to buy a car and just use it for robbing parts as I go along i'm bound to find issues with boots, clutch etc...

Speak to you in the chat rooms, or maybe see you on the roads.

Take it easy, keep your nose between the ditches.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Welcome. Pics are great, we all love them.
Especially of your former Capri if that's a 70's or 80's model. I've driven a '72 GT Capri recently!
