Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Dsg bearing whine

Having owned a GTI MkV for just over three years I'm beginning to realise there are some serious problems with DSG transmissions. In the UK there's even a forum called DSGwoes.co.uk. My car was built in May, 2007 and I'm seeking views on my faulty DSG. The car has done 56,000km and is just out of warranty. About 5,000kms back a bearing whine started on the change up from 1st gear. It now seems to be audible on gears 1 to 4, there's also an over-run sound as each change up occurs. My local dealer (Westco Cairns) has decided that the gearbox has to be replaced at a cost of A$12,000.00! There was no suggestion that the DSG could be repaired. The ECM has had a Stage 1 Oettinger remap, so unsurprisingly Volkswagen Australia declined any out of warranty assistance.
I'm interested to know if there's a chance of finding a second hand gearbox with the part code JPP? Or is it possible to recondition the gearbox? I understand parts are available from the UK and Germany (although not from VW), but I'm having difficulty finding the suppliers? I should be able to get the repairs done in Brisbane. I think VWA's policy of not offering any repairs, but simply expecting the customer to pay a bill equal to more than a quarter of the total cost of the car, is a scandal.
    Appreciate your time.

    Two issues here.

One is called extended warranty, which all VW DSG owners should purchase, but see point 2.

The other is ECU mods which change the torque applied to the transmission. Can't say I'm surprised that VW is denying warranty.

I'd be chasing Oettinger - don't they offer warranty for any damage caused by their chip?

I believe Oettinger have a warranty on the drivetrain so i would be chasing them.
Might be best to get another quote from a private VW specialist though as 12k seems like an awfully large amount of money.

        Thanks guys
I will follow up on the points you have raised, although getting an extended warranty, after the event, would seem impossible. Does anyone know a specialist DSG gearbox repairer?

I think $8k is the standard?

Either way, I'd either be getting a warranty claim of sorts processed, or be looking to sell the car.

This is also why some people get tunes where you can switch them off for servicing.

            Thanks AusScare
The Oettinger Stage 1 that I have is switchable and I certainly did turn it off at service but the Diagnostics still picked up the mod.

I would like to clear up a couple of things about the bearing whine with my DSG. Firstly, the car is out of warranty with VWA and secondly the ECU was modified in 2007, so any warranty with Oettinger is out of date by two years. I've found out that all the parts for a DSG are available although not in Australia. I just have to figure out how to source them.
