Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • WA Hi, Newbie with GTI/VR6

Hi guys, my gf just acquired a April 96' Golf VR6, lovin the ride so far, got some punch for an n/a :p , have been checking out the diy section and thought i may as well sign up. my other rides a 400hp FC RX7

    so hi from perth

couple issues ive got with the car, which seem to be the most common are:

    -rear window regs are screwed
    -roof lining sagging
-got to constantly keep tapping globes to make them work? crazy..
-and just replaced the oil cooler seal today as it was seeping out a bit of oil
-one other gremlin im trying to figure out is why my front right indicator still wont function after putting in a brand new globe.
-also if you guys could tell me what the pcd is thatd be great (i could seach but thought id spark up a convo ) i noticed a few pics of other golfs with audi/benz rims.. i used to own a couple e-class's (260E, 300E) and i got some spare 18"brabus monoblock v's laying around.

    cheers,

    Aaron

Welcome along mate, get some pics up asap

    - Window regs are very common, buy new ones if you can
    - Roof lining is easily replaced, search for the good DIY on here
    - Sounds like a dodgy conncetion in the bulb holder maybe?
    - Check wiring to the indicator or see if its been unplugged
    - VR6 runs a 5x100 PCD, standard offset of around ET35. Merc wheels will fit, but will require 5x100 - 5x112 adapters which are quite reasonable. Wouldnt put anything bigger than a 17" wheel on a MK3, 16s are the perfect size

Yea welcome. As Lorenz said, the PCD is 5x100, stock bbs wheels are 6.5 inch wide with an offset of 43 if your wanting to calculate clearances with new wheels. And yea, 18's just look too big on a mk3 imo, I havent seen one pull it off properly. Maybe if you put the thing on air, lay the sides/lip on the ground, put some crazy stretched rubber with a tiny sidewall and tucked a few inches of rim you could make 18's look baller, but that would take crazy amounts of work haha.

Anyway hope your gf has some fun with it plenty of usefull info around the forum

cheers guys, yeah will check out the diy section. and yeh i reckon 18s would look way too big, 15 bbs are cool gives it a nice low down ride, thinking of going 16 bbs's with a polished lip i know the stock infini fc's came with 16" bbs's with lip but then again theyre 5x114. and trust me i know about tyre stretch haha.. fc has 18x9 +22 with 235's, 18x10s +11 has potenza 245's (potenzas give a nice stretch) will update with some pics later on but for now heres my daily

          Your car looks good

And yea 16 inch bbs with some nice lips looks great on the mk3. If you haven't already take a look through the mk3 appreciation thread on here, or through this VWVortex.com - -=Mk3 Stance Thread=-

You'll see BBS rs in like every third pic, but for good reason, it does look pretty damn good.
