Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD 1st Vee Dub I've owned!

    Hey all,

I'm new to the whole VW thing and have just bought a new 09 Polo Pacific TDi.

I NEED the following mods done ASAP
    * re-map (do APR do them for the TDi?)
    *exhaust inc. new Cat.
    * lowering - 25mm-30mm would be just perfect
    * wheels - I've tried looking for rims but it appears there's not much around with the same stude pattern

Any ideas would help! Hope to hear from you soon!

    Matty C.

    Heyyy dude. Welcome to VWW.

Nice list of mods there, I'll try answer them as helpful as possible...
    * Oettinger does a tune for the 103TDI which boosts it to 125kw and 380NM, it also comes with a warranty and can be obtained through Harding Performance at South Brisbane (where I got mine done).
    * Exhaust can be done at a few different places including Hardings, Prestige and Performance or even getting it fabricated to custom suit your car. I've heard that any one of those options can be pricey and don't justify the small power increase.
    * I got my TDI lowered through Prestige and Performance at Coorparoo, I got Eibach springs installed for $950 and it dropped it by 30mm.
    * Wheels can be an absolute bitch to obtain. Generally, you have to get them from overseas or custom drilled to suit the PCD. Click for some nice, well priced rims. I'm still waiting for them to e-mail me in regards to shipping to Brisbane.

Enjoy the economy! I know I'll miss it from next Saturday.

    Alex.

      Hi,

You might want to investigate Superchips and their bluefin option, www.mybluefin.com.au, sold by

      James McDowall Alba European

Address: 271 Daw Road Runcorn 4113 Queensland Australia

offer both handheld device you attach to diag port which saves the original map and applies the upgraded one or a workshop remap like the oettinger

claims similar resultd to Oettinger for about 1/3 the cost, self applied remap. but i gather some later VW diesels have the ecu encrypted
and need to be remapped in the workshop.

        Hey guys,

        Thanks for the quick replies!

I think I'll go with the Harding Performance option. Those Oettinger chips have a good rep.

Also, in relation to PCD of wheels, are they a 5x100 stud pattern, the same as a WRX? I'm thinking if yes, I've can score a set of genuine WRX 17's and get them sprayed black and they'll do nicely! A friend has a set sitting under his house because his WRX now wears Volk Racing, which I know I can't afford!!!

        Thanks again!

Nah the PCD on the Mk5's are 5x112. It'd make life a lot easier if they were 5x100!

As for the tune; do your research. Read consumer reviews and balance the pros and cons including the financial side. IIRC, Oettinger is the most expensive.

            Hey Maca,

Thanks for pointing that out! I made a few calls this morning was was a bit shocked at the price differences!

Also, thanks for confirming that mine is a Mk5, I pretty much had no idea. I wasn't even considering one of these until a week ago so it's all new to me!

I'll let you know how I go!

Regarding those wheels you might purchase, the stud pattern for WRX's and STI's changed from 5x100 to 5x112 for some models. All WRX including 04 STI are 5x100, all STI 05+ are 5x114.3.

So first you'd want to make sure that you got the correct model wheels with the correct PCD. The other issue is that Subaru use a higher offset than advisable for our cars. I am not quite certain of Polo offsets though, I'm speaking from a Golf perspective.

Congrats on the car mate, I hope it treats you well.

                Hey Madglf3,

Thanks for the advice on the WRX wheels. I've decided to just go to my local mag dealer at northgate, on Sandgate Rd. I dropped in there on my way home from work and he was the most helpful bloke I've come across!

He's given me a list of brands he can supply at reasonable prices and all the brochures and I've just gotta pick the wheels I like and he'll check the availability!

Also, I am going to be going to Alba European for an ECU upgrade. Thanks again to Macca for that info, I didn't know that the guy that runs Alba was on the forum!

Thanks to all for the advice!

No dramas! I'm gonna go see Jimmy for the tune on my next car.

Perhaps come down to the dyno day in a few weeks? It's a good way to meet a few of the local Dubbers

                    Hey Maca,

I'll be in for the dyno day if I get the car by then, I'm waiting on a property settlement and it's taking a little longer than I'd like!

Is it advertised on the forum? If so, under what section? This is the first forum I've been on!

                    Matt.

Yeah mate, it's under the "Events" section (or Clicky here). It's still three weeks away so plenty of time!
