Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Sump guard Mk5

As a 2007 Golf GT Sport TDI owner I'd like to see if anyone has fitted a sumpguard. My mechanic warned me about the fragile nature "paper thin " sump.I read some where there's a sumpguard/chassis stiffener available....any ideas?????

How many cracked sumps has your mech replaced/repaired? I know a fair few Golf drivers & have only ever heard of 1 sump breaking.

Only going by what my mechanic said.... and the gt sport is 15mm lower and we live in the country...potholes that any fisherman would be pleased cast into.I've found a Unibrace which will protect and stiffen the underside not shure if it actually protects the sump though

follow the link I quoted & spend about $400 and you can drive without fear. I've put mine through some massive woop-de-doos without issue. If potholes are the problem, I'd be more concerned about tyre sidewalls (if you have the Continentals)

PS: the oil pan is 2mm thick

i second the more concern about your wheels/tyres and suspension being damaged before your sump
