  • QLD Newbie introduction.

Hi again , I should have done this first up.

Anyhow, Born and bred in Brissie, currently northside soon to be north coast hinterland.
We have just purchased a 2010 Jetta TDI manual.
Have owned several V dubs over the years including 1100 Beetle 1500 sedan 1964 1200 Deluxe , 1976 1600 Golf (swallowtail) and 1978 german import Golf with sunroof, this has an 86 Mk11 turbo diesel in it. Still have both Golfs the diesel is the daughters daily drive and the 76 is a future project, it has a GTI donk with 5 speed.

    Cheers Dave L.

    Hej Dave
Your Jetta is the closest to mine I've heard about on this site. I'm really keen to try and work out the "computer controlled throttle input" on my 1.6 TDI. Would you mind checking yours out to see if yours does the same? ie pulls a bit of power off down hill and puts a bit on up (when driving WITHOUT cruise engaged).
Would be very grateful if you could.
This is confirmed by the instant litres / 100 k readout change as well as by "the seat of the pants". (With foot frozen on the accelerator position)
I started driving by taking my licence test in a 63 VW Kombi (1200cc); had my own brand new one in a 1970 1600 Fastback then departed the fold for Japanese makes before returning this year to again another VW 1600; and wow; what a change. My love is with a 17 year old Mitsubishi Lancer GSR (4 wd turbo) which I've had since new; has 350 000ks and still goes like stink.
    Cheers rory

Hi Rory, I will take notice when on the freeway next time. One thing I love about electronic diesels is the way you can take off without touching the accelerator , the ECU tries to keep the revs around 1000 rpm so basically ups the fuel to compensate for the drop in revs as you let the clutch out. How do you find the accuracy of the speedo? I have checked mine against a GPS and it reads 7 K's high eg. when speedo shows 100KPH actually doing 93 KPH , a bit too far out to put up with.
I was up your way over the W/E we have a place at TCB we get to when we can. Do you know any Masons or Browns in Gympie?

          Cheers Dave L.

            Hi Dave
The speedo inaccuracy annoys. Sounds like yours is about the same as mine . About 6.5% overreading throughout the range. I have a Garmin GPS when I go on longer trips and on the "cruise" window I find I set 65 for 60; 85 for 80; 106 or 107 for 100 and 117 for 110. The needle speedo disagreesmore and actually reads about 8% fast
Inquiring about this on this forum I was led to a document saying that VW is part of some UN Convention where makers agree set the speedo to overrread purposely (save us from speeding?-not thinking about us causing roadrage for holding up traffic) . At my first service I asked and was told that up to 10% is acceptable to VW (and the limit as required by Australian ADRs)
            It gets less annoying with
            time
The odometer is supposedly spot on (I haven't really checked that but find the computed litres /100 seems to be pretty well correct at every refill based on the tripmeter kilometers. I usually get under 5 litres/100ks and between 4.8 to 5.2. Live in the country and don't do much stop start city type driving.
Don't know those folk at TCB but I know some Browns from Atherton and Winton and 1 that was a Mason at Herberton (NQ)
            Cheers

              speedo inaccuracy

is the speedo inaccuracy fixable? I seem to spend my whole time comparing the speedo on my Tiguan to the speedo on my Garmin GPS.
Service centre told me it is only out 3 km at 100km/hr - but is actually over-reading 5-6 km/hr.
I am still VERY annoyed about it
They basically told me to lump it or like it

                Hi roxywaffle
Yeah. It's annoying isn't it? My 2009 Jetta 1.6 TDI overreads more than that according to my Garmin. The Digital is about +6.5% throughout the range and the "needle" even worse . To get 110 on my Garmin I dial up 117 on my cruise speed window and the "needle" sits on 119.
My VWauthorized workshop says up to +10 % is VW acceptable (more than 10% is Aussie ADR rules unacceptable) and that it can't be adjusted.
Read on this site that VW is signatory to a UN agreement to purposely make the speedo overread (prevent majority of unaware drivers from speeding? Causing road rage by holding up traffic is probably not a UN problem?
After 6 months in my new "baby" it seems a lot less annoying-overall I love my baby TDI. Its not the first off at the lights but the 5 litres of diesel I have to buy for every 100ks I drive makes up for that.
                Cheers

                  Hi Rory
Have had my Tiguan for 3 months and nearly 8,000km, am getting used to the speedo inaccuracy. I love the car - but there is another more annoying trait than the speedo. The Garmin is activated if I unlock the doors, or even open the doors, consequently the battery in the Garmin is constantly being drained. I found the same thing happens to the ipod in the console. Local dealership where I bought the Tiguan are in the low end of intelligence, honesty and curiosity so I have given up on them about pretty much anything. Except for getting a full refund for the ipod connector. Will try and find a dedicated thread to talk about that!!
                  happy tigging
