Hi all, first question if I may. We have just purchased a 2010 1.6 TDI Jetta. I don't know the car very well at this stage but would love to be able to disable the clutch in to start feature. Is it a simple matter of programming, disconnecting a switch or something more sinister?

Welcome rigor. I've got a 6 month old silver (2009) 1.6 TDI Jetta with 7 speed DSG and cruise fitted. Before that I had a Hyundai 1.6 i30 diesel and before that a Hyundai Getz; both with clutch in to start. Great idea I thought. You'll never "jump" into that Rolls parked in front of you at the car park.
In my Jetta I've noticed that a "computer" has input into my throttle setting-it pulls a bit off going downhills and puts a bit on going up (without cruise engaged). Maybe this is a feature of the car when cruise is fitted? Do you have the cruise option? Have you noticed anything like I'm describing?
Love my Jetta; especialy when I open my wallet at servos. Reading from comments on this site I'ts taken me about 6 months to decide to use BP Ultimate first and Shell second choice. Neither of these are available in my town; the nearest being about 80ks away.

Thanks for the reply Rory, only had the car for 5 days and yes i have cruise. It's a 5 speed manual so has a clutch switch for the cruise, wonder if a different switch for the start mode? Looking forward to getting some miles up as it is a delight to drive.
Only critisism I have to date is the clutch switch and the external mirrors which i find a bit average. Do you know which diesels are the ones to use? I believe BP ultimate as you suggested and Caltex optimax are up there, any others?

The wing mirrors on your jetta may not be set up correctly.
firstly you need to place your driver seat so that with your back against the seat your wrists rest on top of the steering wheel.
Then you need to adjust your mirrors so that the inside of the wing mirrors match up with the outside of the rear view mirror.
This should give you all the visibility you need.

Gleaned from this site that BP ultimate offers the highest MIMIMUM cetane rating. All fuels come from the same refinery in Australia with cetane ratings having a minimum and maximum requirement. More cetane= more oomph or economy? So. On any day are we buying the same cetane fuel that falls within the limits?
BP also markets BP diesel; so a choice. Think Shell has only the one grade. Caltex markets diesel and Vortex diesel (latter unavailable here in Gympie). Read that the 2 Caltex diesels were different only in that Vortex has a cleaning agent and "perfume" added for the extra cents.
The big deal is the DPF filter on our TDI s apparently. "Dirty" fuel makes it work overtime. I also drive a Toyota Hilux 2.8 litre diesel and have noticed that after some fills of the tank; the black smoke coming out going up hills is really noticeable; at other times not. So there is a difference between fuels we won't "see" in our Jettas by looking in the mirror.
I've decided to get BP Ultimate whenever I can with Shell my second choice. We don't have a Shell in Gympie and Caltex sells only the base diesel so it doesn't make any difference whether I shop at Coles or Woolies.

Hi Anthony , Rory, Jetta is Candy White . Not many colours to choose from as you are probably aware , especially with the no on roads deal going at the time. Considered a few others, briefly Korean (very briefly) Honda City , Civic , Mazda 3 , Golf , the deal and the extras with the Jetta and a long time appreciation of VW's basically sealed the deal. I won't get into a debate over what brand is better or worse as there are lots of good vehicles in that size and price range out there. Retireing the wifes 89 Camry, a most bland handleing and performing car but incredibily reliable and functional.
Rory , we have a reasonable choice in Brissie of course but will heed your advice re BP ultimate. My other vehicle is a 3.0 litre Jackaroo (caterpillar injection system) so understand the need for good diesel . I hope I don't need the skills that I have needed for the Jackeroo, a most problematic engine indeed, but, like most things when you understand them they are OK.
