Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD New buyer service questions

First post from an ex Golf owner - a first generation that I loved to the end but that drove me to despair at times. I'm about to purchase a new Golf 90TSI manual (my wife and I are still arguing over whether it will be white or silver) as a car that I intend to keep for at least 8 years but have been more than a little shocked at the service costs that members seem to be posting. Is $1300 - $1900 really what I can expect at the 60,000km service? Since my 5 years with my 1977 Golf I have had a run of very reliable, low maintainance Japanese stuff that has been less than inspiring but never cost more than $800 for any service and that I have kept for at least 8 years. I do around 40,000km a year and all these vehicles do around 300,000km before I offload them. I so much want to get another Golf again but I thought the days of a annual replacement of brake pads would be long gone. Can I expect to get 200,000km out of a new Golf's pads like I have on my 06 Forester? I know the servicing periods are 15,000km instead of 12,500km but the biggest service on it was the 125,000km with cam belt change at $750 and most services only cost $210. When they change the geabox & diff oils every 50,000km then it jumps to $450 but that's it, it's never needed anything else. What can I expect it to cost me to get the Golf to 300,000km in the next 8 years and what parts and how often will need replacing?

Had our white Golf 90TSI manual with comfort pack for 3 weeks now and all going well. Love it as a matter of fact. Already has done 2800km and checked the oil yesterday and it took almost a full L to top up. I gather that is normal for a new Golf engine and hope it settles in with a few more km. I have already decided that the 15" alloys must go but have decided what to replace them with. Have averaged 6.1L/100km so far but it has had a fair run of country km's as part of my work. It is so different to drive from our Forester but both are needed for our work travelling.

        Hi,

We have a 90TSI manual in United Grey and absolutely love the car. I am intrigued by the post about oil usage as mine is now 6months old with almost 9000km on the clock. I check the oil every week and so far have not needed to add a drop (touch wood)

I have found the car a joy to drive and a pleasure to own. I still own my MKIV Golf that I have had for a couple of years as I couldn't part with it for the pittance I was offered as a trade in.

Re the oil I hadn't checked it from new so I don't really know just how full it was to start with. Will be keeping a bit more of a closer eye on it from now but I'm not too worried as it's when you might expect a new engine to use a bit. My brother's Jetta 118TSI used a bit to start with too but settled down after a few km's. I have just been so used to never having to check oil use in the last 13 years of driving.
