hi folks,
a potential Golf GTI or R buyer here in the ACT.
I'm a little confused regarding the stamp duty applicable to the Golf GTI and R here in the ACT and was wondering what people have actually experienced in their car purchases.
The reason for my confusion is that there appear to be contradictory statements and understandings regarding the applicable rates here.
eg
Option 1.
The ACT Revenue Office: Motor vehicles site says to look on http://www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au site to get a Greenhouse and Air pollution score which in turn gives a Green vehicle rating which in turn determines the rate of stamp duty.
This gives
Golf R DSG: Greenhouse=6.5, Air=7.5, Total=14.0, Rating=B
Golf R Man: Greenhouse=6.0, Air=7.5, Total=13.5, Rating=C
GTI DSG: Greenhouse=7.0, Air=7.5, Total=14.5, Rating=B
GTI Man: Greenhouse=7.0, Air=7.5, Total=14.5, Rating=B
So the Golf-R manual gets charged stamp duty of $3/100 up to $45k and $5/100 thereafter,
and the three other variations get charged only $2/100 up to $45k and $4/100 therefter.
Option 2.
Virtually all of the quotes I have seen and both the GTI and Golf-R pricing spreadsheets posted on this site use the "C" rating for all four variations of cars here and hence overestimate the Stamp Duty by around $450 on a typical GTI and $600 on a typical Golf-R with DSG.
Now I'd love option 1 . to be right but the alternate option has pretty much everyone backing it except the ACT government websites (though a dealer listing a higher stamp duty figure than they actually get charged means a windfall profit which they hardly have an incentive to correct)
So this is a query for anyone who has actually purchased or at least seen the actual stamp duty payments for a Golf-GTI and/or Golf-R in manual and DSG form in the ACT recently.
What stamp duty were you charged?
For the portion up to $45k was it $2 or $3 per $100?
For the portion over $45k was it $4 or $5 per $100?
Cheers,
Laurie
