Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hey all! Looking at a Golf R hopefully ;)

    Hey all,

cool forum. I'm looking at leasing though work a Golf R in united grey, DSG, adaptive chassis control and either black or silver 19" Talladega wheels. Just have to get the minister for war and finance to sign off on it lol! Anyone got any pros and cons for going with the 19" wheels vs 18"s? The only issues I can think of straight up are slightly harder ride and issues with scraping the guards and fitting chains for the snow?

    Go the Veedubs!!!!!!!!!

Not 100% sure if you can actually fit snow chains to the 18's.
The tyres should also be cheaper for the 18's over the 19's.

I have 19's and noticed a slight difference in ride quality.
However i would be running a larger sidewall so it would be more pronounced on the R

Any particualr reason you are going the R route?

I was pretty much mainly going for looks with the 19"s but on second thought I'm starting to think their are more pros for staying with the stock18's. IE: Save $1300, better ride quality etc.

Reason I want to go an R is that I was hooked when a mate came over in his MKV GTi but wanted something slightly different and unique to the increasing number of GTIs. My Mrs loves the Golfs too so it has something for everyone. We only have two young kids so don't need a big family car. The R seems like a nice compromise in comfort and performance. Better fuel eco vs a larger car as well, awd, fast. Plus I love the chuckability factor of a hatch.

Sounds like you have done some research.

Have you taken the whole family along to see how you all fit in the car?
Also i would reccomend taking day-trip type luggage with you to see if it will fit suitably.

The main issue i had withteh R was the fact that there was not much room on the driver day with 4 people stuffed in it.

          Thanks mate appreciate your input.

Haven't taken the family yet. WIll hopefully test drive one now that I have 2 weeks off work lol. I thought it was fairly roomy compared to alot of other hatches but I guess I need to load 4 bigger people in and see how it goes. Most of the time though it will be Just me, the mrs and 2 small kids so no drama.

Anyone know where I can find a list of colours available? I have looked but can't see a proper list. I did see a colour I liked called 'carbon steel' on a GTI. Is that available for the R too?

The only problem I think I might have in the end is I heard it could be up to a bloody 5 month wait for an R!!

There are only 5 colour options for the R (or as some people here would say: 1 colour and four tones).

Rising Blue (only available on R)
            Candy White
            Reflex Silver
            United Grey
            Deep Black

You can sort of see them all here: Volkswagen Golf > Combinations > Volkswagen Golf > Golf Index > New Car Models > Volkswagen Australia

              I would go white.

The grey/silver does noting to make the car stand out.
The blue is okay but doesn't have a patch on the Biscay blue / Deep blue pearl of the previous R's imho.
Black makes you loose the black highlght details.

Thanks for all the input guys. Yeah im leaning towards the blue or united grey and so is the Mrs. She doesn't like the white lol. Test drove a GTI today as an R wasn't available just so the Mrs and kids could see how it was and get an idea of the R. EVen the GTI was awesome and everyone including the MRs was very impressed so I can't wait to get my hands on the R. Have done the sums and a lease with my work seems to suit us well so almost ready to order

                Looking at

                DSG
                Adaptive Chassis Control
                Sunroof
                Media Device Interface

Just need to decide on the damn colour lol! So hard when they are as rare as hens teeth to see in the flesh let alone the colour you want!

Golf R for $50K with those options

Mate, is that price you posted on road, drive/away?

Using the Golf R calculator, even without onroads you'd be $56,160.

                            Doesn't make sense.....

Have you got it yet? Tick all boxes? Worth the extra 10K?
