  • WA Hi !!!

    Hey there,

I pick up my brand new 2010 GTI Golf on Saturday and can't wait I have recently moved from Darwin to WA.

I have a query though, when I spoke to the dealer briefly about if I could use my ipod he said that I'd need an MDI installed which costs around $550+

Is it not possible to play my ipod without this? He seemed to think not.

    Cheers

    Hi Janine,

The MDI allows the use of external music sources for the stereo.
I believe you need the MDI and then a i(product) cable to allow use of the apple music sources.
The MDI and extra cable should be able to be sourced from ebay/ecstuning/oemplus etc a lot cheaper.

Hope you enjoy the GTI, they are a pretty fun car to drive.

      Thanks

So if I bought something like this off ebay am I best to take it to a volkswagen service centre to fit it and would they knowing it is from somewhere like Hong Kong (maybe made differently)..?

I asked the dealer about the Sat Nav instead of the MDI and he said it was like $3000 and that I was better off buying a tomtom which I already have anyway but I just thought the dvd player would be cool but he said it didn't work whilst driving anyway cos it's illegal.

If you want the RNS510, you can get them from Ebay UK for $1150 landed, and they can be installed by yourself.
With vagcom coding it is an extra $50 and you have the full system (minus the skar fin antenna) for $1200AU

The Media in + iProduct cable info can be found here:

He's right in saying that its illegal, but its possible to do.. just dont wire it to the hand brake. I bought one of those Honk Kong units, and it works flawlessly. DVD, AVI, MP3, CD, SD card, USB, SatNav, Ipod, TV, AUX just to name a few.. and all for $500AUD landed and installed.

            Hi Janine and welcome aboard.

don't worry about the music - spend all your money on bigger turboes and big noisy exhausts, much more fun!!

                Welcome

It's true that you can't use the DVD function of the RNS510 while driving. The moment your car begins to move above a certain speed limit, the screen goes blank. Doesn't seem so bad if you're listening to a live music dvd recording.

Also, I think there's an alternate way that allows you to play your ipod with the right connector using the aux in. The problem though is you won't be able to control the interface through media in. I suppose if you've already paid so much for your gti, you'd probably want to get it done right and neat.

If you have bluetooth, and a bluetooth capable ipod (ipod touch or iphone), then the new IOS 4.1 (released today I think) allows full bluetooth playback control (ff, rw, next/previous track, etc). If you have the bluetooth option, then an ipod touch would be cheaper than getting the MDI fitted.
