edit: you guys probably want to know that I'm yet to own a VW... last three cars: 1990 Camry sedan, Pug 307, Pug 207 GTI -- all manual transmissions

Have you test driven the R yet?
Have you considered a GTI in it's place?

Yup, drove the R a week and a half ago. My car hasn't seemed nearly as nice since.

Nope, haven't considered the GTI seriously as the R just seems much better value (and I can afford it -- a little more than 1/3 of this year's gross salary, and since I use the car for work there are some nice tax concessions).
