Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • SA - Povpak Mk3

Long time listener, first time caller

I gave Lorenz a lift a few years ago to pick up his Mk3, and it appears to have rubbed off on me. I noticed a couple of months ago that a kid at work's mother had a clean looking 3 door Mk3 so I asked him to tell her that if she ever wanted to sell it I'd be interested... Turns out she was looking at getting a new car so I ended up buying it last weekend.

Probably shouldn't have looked at it in the rain, its not quite as clean as I thought it was but it has lowish km's and the interior is spotless and other things can be fixed over time.

I don't really have a need for another car, but I kind of wanted something practical that would fit my wheels from my other car so it was pretty much down to a Mk3 or an E30

as they are 4x100 and I've had a few of the Japanese options already and wanted something different to share the carport with my MX5 Clubman

I had to cut down a couple of trees on the weekend that divided my carport from my courtyard so I could fit the MX5 in there and the Golf in the carport

Mission accomplished. Kind of got the MX5 stuck though, the battery is flat so I had to push it back and forth trying to manouver it around that pole and one tree stump that I ran out of time to get out of the ground, with my 13yo half-brother steering, ended up parallel to the brick fence with about 1cm clearance... whoops. Had to get the scissor jack out so I could get the trolley jack under the diff and roll it across a few inches, then when Tom got back in so I could push it back out of the way he twisted the key when it was only halfway in the ignition and snapped my only key. I was not overly happy... All good now though

    Plans for the Golf...

Bought a set of Hottuning coilovers from Lorenz and Robin, they'll go in soon

Planning on putting my SSR Mk3's on it (mainly because I like the ideas of Mk3's on a Mk3) 15x7 +26/13, but I need to get some hubcentric rings to suit them, plus some 5mm slip-ons to clear the front brakes

I've also got a pair of mesh headrest Recaros to go in it with some Mk3 rails that have been modified to fit the seats, but I need to unjam the drivers side height adjust mechanism first, its set too high and wont go down, so I fit in there about as well as I do in my old man's car (ie head tilted to the side, hard up against the roof)

I'm not planning on doing anything to increase the power, the MX5 is plenty good enough for that

I'm planning on replacing all the hoses, doing the rocker cover gasket and a couple of other things that can perish over time, new brake rotors and pads in the front and either new drum shoes or a rear disc conversion if I can find one cheap enough
