Towing Caravan with VW Tiguan auto diesel 103TDI (MY2010) purchased June 2010
For those interested, have just returned from trip Sydney to Port Macquarie and return, towing a 2005 Windsor Rapid 14'6" x 7' caravan (only 2500kms on Tig speedo). Went extremely well, very stable, tows level no deflection (using 4 bar WDH) lots of power, consumption 10.1 to 10.4 lts/100kms travelling at 100kph with 3 people in Tiguan. Mass of Windsor is 1220kgs empty 1400kgs loaded. NOTE: towing mass with Tig is NO problem (rated at 2000kgs), BUT tow ball mass IS (rated at 100kgs). Had to rearrange the Windor Van loading to achieve the max 100kgs TBM. Answer: Remove gas bottle (only 1x4.5kg bottle) secuely carry in Tiguan while travelling, plus remove ALL weight in front access hatch (ie poles etc) and relocate to back end recess under fold up bed, plus relocate any HEAVY objects that are forward of the axle where possible (ie tinned food, etc) to rear behind axle. Was able to achieve just under 100kgs (check mass using ditigal quality scales at van coupling & deduct weight of jockey wheel to check)
